Just got back from there. Yes, they are still working on the pool at the Kia Ora. It appears to be almost finished.

Just back from KOV. Pool in not finished. They hope to have open in August. Filled pool while we were there to make sure it was OK. Will be very nice when it's open.

Just back from 9 amazing days on Rangiroa! The Kia Ora was magnificent, and the Sauvage a unique highlight. We kept meeting folks who had moved from island to island, and almost without exception their favorite was Rangiroa… not the place for those who want shopping or nightlife, but for relaxation and classic “south Pacific” imagery it was like traveling back to an earlier, less commercialized era… but with all the luxury we could have wanted!

We stayed in beach bungalows at the village both before and after Sauvage. Both were very nice, but we preferred the one on the west side of the village… a little newer, a little more private, a little more sand, and fewer trees so a little more sun. And I would avoid the middle bungalows (1-12) as their beach access is impeded by a small retaining wall, and their view is limited by the OW bungalows. The OW bar was a great place to sit and watch the boats and feed the fish. And the restaurant was excellent, once you got past the price shock! We were a little surprised by the lack of fresh fruit and vegetables (very poor soil so little grows on the atoll), but the fresh fish was endless and outstanding! The pool opened on August 9, and seemingly attracted mostly kids – of which there weren’t too many. Rangaroa seemed to be much more a couple’s destination than a family one!

It was Bernard’s month as host at Sauvage, and together with his wife & mother-in-law we were very well fed and as busy (or not) as we wanted to be! And while we didn’t miss having electricity, being able to take a hot shower before dinner was wonderful! The west end of the motu is a great (and private) swimming (and sunning) spot, and the sunsets there were spectacular, especially with a loved one and a cold Hinano from Bernard’s bar!

And “thanks” to those on the forums who recommended bringing water shoes (lots of coral), plenty of sunscreen, mosquito repellant (only for Sauvage), personal items (very limited shopping, very high prices), changing money at the airport in Papeete (exchange rate was 10% better than at the hotel, and there is no ATM on Rangaroa), and Le Kai Kai restaurant (great food at almost half the cost of Kia Ora!) We add our own recommendations for restaurant Vai Mario (they will pick you up just like Kai Kai), and the small restaurant at the freighter pier where you can eat & drink the cheapest food & beer we found anywhere on Rangaroa while sitting on their covered deck and watching the local “action” (you can take the water taxi, but walking is almost as fast and the ocean coastline is beautiful.) We considered renting scooters or a “fun car”, but ended up just using bicycles… you don’t need to be Lance Armstrong to travel the 8 or so kilometers of very flat road, and no engine noise was a big advantage to us. Can’t say anything about the various excursions that are offered as we were content to snorkel and swim off our own beach.

All in all, we LOVED it, and can’t wait to go back!

I know what you mean... My wife and I were in an OWB at the KOV back in 1998 and very content snorkeling and reading, rode bikes into Avatoru (wife almost run over by van) She forgot the slower you go the harder to stay balanced. Anyway, It cost me a pearl along the way. Rangiroa was magical for us. As soon as we got back home, I started saving for this trip. We will be returning October 1 for 8 nights. the question of the day, What to do today? Snorkel, swim, Walk along the beach, Dive.
