Shuweb, great report & pictures! I haven't checked in to this site for a while, and it was so nice to see your report and 'revisit' the Pirogue. We stayed in bung.#3 and I do agree that you really must stay in 1,2 or 3. The #4 is considered a beach bungalow, but it's really more a 'superior garden', and I can't imagine how hot those garden bungalows get, when even our beach bung. was quite toasty! Not that I minded, I LOVE the heat - I've had my quota of cold growing up in Finland..

We are so used to more rustic accommodations (Relais Mahana in Huahine is our favorite) that to us La Pirogue was quite luxurious, we loved all the fresh flowers in the room every day, and how everyone removed their sandals when entering the restaurant or bar, and just the general cleanliness of the place. It was very quiet there in Feb, we stayed 5 days and only saw 5 or 6 other couples come and go. The downside to it being the slow season was that they didn't have many excursions available, like the sailing trip.

We didn't have a ton of mosquitos in Feb., but lots of pesky flies, on our patio and in the restaurant at breakfast.

Re. the $5 water...that really bummed us out since we drink a lot of water, but we did the "ugly tourist" thing and bought 6 liters of water on our first outing to Tahaa and brought it back. We always bring a small collapsible cooler on these trips, and Severine gave us ice from the bar to keep the drinks cool. There's no fridge in the room. TV doesn't work, but who needs it anyway, bring a little battery-powered radio and listen to the local stations - you really know you're on vacation when you hear the music and the French & Tahitian language.

We absolutely loved Dave's tour, the coral gardens next to Le Tahaa are just fantastic. We went back there on our own the day after we took his tour, brought sandwiches and beer from Pirogue and just kicked back and snorkled the afternoon.

On our last day we found this beautiful spot, a small strip of sand just north of Motu Porou (La Pirogue). We took the outrigger canoe (ask Dave to teach you how to "operate" one , not as easy as it seems..)and paddled 10-15 min. along the motu. I think it was the motu next to La Pirogue's or the next. From that spot you can see Bora Bora in the distance, Tahaa on your left, secluded motus on your right and the ocean between the motus. My new Happy Place.

Tahaa by the way is amazingly beautiful, I imagine Moorea was like that about 50 years ago. I wonder if the absence of sand beaches on Tahaa is the reason that it hasn't developed into more touristy island?

Ooops, I was going to write an overdue trip report on Huahine & Tahaa today, but seems that I got stuck here instead! Shuweb, I agree La Pirogue should get more recognition, it is a jewel.
