I went to Moorea and Le Taha'a for my honeymoon in 2005. We loved Le Taha'a and I am dying to go back (we are planning a trip there in 2008 for our 3 year anniversary). For fun, I was looking at the reviews of Le Taha'a on tripadvisor.com. Some of the more recent reviews are very negative.

When we were there it was paradise. Granted, we stayed in a Bora Bora view overwater bungalow, so the bugs were not an issue in our bungalow, but I don't remember there being tons of bugs while eating in either of the two dining areas (the casual lunch place near the pool and the upstairs open-air restaurant for dinner). Also, while the food was expensive, I didn't think it was so outrageous after spending time on Moorea and going to many of the nice restaurants there (Te Honu Iti, etc.). I did notice that the price of the honeymoon spa treatment almost doubled (its now over 90000 xpf, and when I was there it was more in the 50000 range).

Has the resort really changed that much? Anyone have recent experiences they can share? I know Le Taha'a is closing for remodeling in 2007, so maybe they will address some of the issues mentioned in the reviews.

I noticed the same thing as you... we're thinking of spending a couple of nights at Tahaa this summer. One thing I have noticed with the TA reviews is that the folks who post there are not always the ones who post here and that, frequently, you get posters there who did not have realistic expectations of French Polynesia, were inexperieced travellers, who failed to do their research and therefore bought a package to a destination that never could have pleased them, etc. There is a hilarious (IMHO) review from a poster about the Manihi Pearl Beach that a few of us have commented on in another thread... the reviewer booked TEN nights there and loathed it. You really have to read the review-- it's unbelievable. Having been twice to the Manihi Pearl Beach, I love it-- but it's not for everyone. And ten nights would be too much for me.

The cost factor seems to get some people-- it is expensive and it does cost far more than other, more service-oriented destinations like Mexico (which I love, too-- but it's not FP). I see many, many reviews on TripAdvisor basically saying that for X dollars, the poster expected incredible service and I want to laugh... sometimes, their definition of high falls far short of mine and sometimes that's just what the property costs and you have to decide personally if it's worth it to you. I think the Venetian in Las Vegas is worth $300/night (lots of folks on TA disagree), but I don't believe the Sandals Royal Bahamian in the Bahamas is worth their sticker price (and lots of folks disagree with me). So hopefully this is just another one of those "funny" TA reviews where the would-be guest was at the wrong property for his or taste!

We spent three days in Tahaa in September 06. We loved it. The service was excellent. Our beach bungalow was over the top. The pool was great. It was a wonderful finish to our trip. If we had to do it over again we would have planned more time for Tahaa. We would return? Yes. Anytime soon? Doubtful. Maybe for our 10 year anniversary. We had been to FP for our honeymoon five years prior but not Tahaa. Hopefully we will return to FP some day but not soon. Why? The cost, we found everything, everywhere (Huahine, Bora Bora, Tahaa) very expensive. That is not to say it wasn't worth it or that we won't go again. We are in Florida and regularly visit the Bahamas. We can do several trips for the cost of one to FP. If you can afford it I say don't miss Tahaa.

We are staying at Le Tahaa in mid-April 2007 on our first-ever trip to FP. We have read some recent posts about this resort being closed for renovations during part of 2007.. can anyone provide more details? The resort mentioned nothing of this when we booked the stay.. Thanks so much!

They are suppose to close for remodeling in the beginning of the year. Not sure when it will re-open. I would email the hotel directly and ask what the dates are.
