Is the public market in Papeete open on Sundays? A guidebook I read said that was the best day to go as people from outlying areas in town for church would come to sell their wares. Is this a good place to find home-made monoi oil? Do they take credit cards at some places or just CPF? Thanks for your input!

I asked my Travel Agent your first question, and after looking into it, she said that yes, the market is open on Sunday, but on in the morning. I don't know the answers to your other questions, but I hope that htis part helps. Have a fund time! (BTW, we, too, are planning our trip so that we can make it to the market on Sunday a.m.)

You can find many vendors at the open market in Papeete that sells Monoi oil. They are usually in 4 oz. bottles that you commonly see for sale. I'm not sure if you can find "home-made" Monoi oil since it may be a violation to sell.

The market is open every day of the week, right? I understand Sunday is the best day to go...how about a decent week day? M-F?

Hi again fatcat! Monoi oil is made from the native tiare flower (gardenia like) and is put in soaps, oils, lotions, etc. and from what I've read, it's also great as a bug repellent?! Supposed to smell wonderful and be really good for your skin, hair, etc. 14 days and counting! See ya there?!

Monoi oil is coconut oil usually perfumed with tiare flowers, sometimes with other scents. It is very good for your skin, makes it really soft, and has antibacterial properties. It also keeps hair from drying out in the sun.
It does not help against mosquitos, but the tiny nonos will not be able to bite you trough the layer of scented oil on your skin.
Monoi oil solidifies in temperatures in the fifties. That's how I know that the temperature herabouts is too low and that I need to return to FP soon. ;-)

I don't know the hours of Sunday market, but the roulettes open around 4-5pm. Everything was excellent there but the steak meal-& come to think about it, I don't remember seeing much livestock on the islands!!!???!!! The pizza is made on a crepe type crust but it was very good & the chinese stir fry, too.
