I did think that post was possibly not serious. Sure too bad someone has to do that because they have had it with questions and queries from new people who would appreciate some kind advice. I now understand why new people are so leery of posting on message boards, because some people feel the need to be so critical of what they deem to be stupid questions. Anyway, I do appreciate any of the helpful replies I had. I have been reading and researching and think the Jan Prince book is very informative. I however wanted more definitive answers than you can get from a book. I think I'll just wing it and avoid the ire of someone that is fed up with lame questions and queries. Again, I do appreciate the helpful replies I did receive. Thanks!

I think certainly "Barbara from Iowa" is parodying. This seems strange though -- does this same person go to the library and feel annoyed at all the people there who are reading, or to church and feel offended because the people there are praying all the time? Gees, why are all these people asking travel questions on a Tahiti travel web site?
I thought it showed some class that everyone simply gave "Barbara from Iowa" the benefit of the doubt and addressed his/her points as if the points had been sincerely made.

I would take the advice of the regulars on here, hamara, pacific andy etc... The book by Jan Prince is probably the most highly recommandated book for all the FP islands. Just recently I took small day trip in Tahiti, and for the past three years that I have been living there noticed a great place to eat. It is called Nuutere in Papara. Excellent food, rather pricy but great. Point being made here, is that it was my stepmom that told me about this place and she has Jan Prince's book (like a bible for her). She is here on vacation, this is her 4th trip and still uses this book. As for your arrival date, since it is New Years, things WILL be closed and expensive, not to mention noisy, Tahitians love to celebrate. I would just stay in your hotel room for the night and catch up on some sleepytime. Bring some snacks with you, if you are at the sheraton it has a great buffet, but since it is New Years you will need a reservation and it is also pricey since it is a Holiday. As for tipping just dont do it,some people get offended, others dont mind. As for the weather, take inconsideration that during this time we are in our summertime, it MAY rain for days, hours or just a few minutes. But you will not find it a real problem. Although right now it would do the islands some good since it is dry over here. Walmarts, costco's are out of the question, you will find a carrefour supermarket that is something like a Super walmart or costco. You will find on the smaller islands little mom and pop markets but nothing big and fancy. Moorea you will have Super Champion (Formally called Toa Moorea). As for the ferry's not a problem, if you are planning on a weekend trip get there early, I do believe that 7:30 they open and the last ferry from moorea to Tahiti is the 4:30/5:00 on the Aramiti 4 and The very big Aramiti. All being said, dont worry about all the little details and just relax and have fun. Once you get off that plane and get struck by the hot humid air, and walk your way up to the customs you will be filled an unexpected joy and excitement. Have fun and good luck

Thanks again for replies, but now with the Wind Song fire, all our plans are cancelled. We are now considering visiting 2 islands (Moorea & ?), if we can re-arrange all our plans.

Jim B...how nice of you. We are going for our 10 year anniversary and would still like to go the first week of January, so will probably do land instead of cruise. Hope you have a great time.

The "Barbara from Iowa" was one of the funniest things I have read on this site. Thanks for the laughs, whoever you are.
However, if you were even halfway serious, I strongly urge you to change your plans and receive immediate treatment for Bridezilla-itis, you've got a terminal case of it. I can guarantee that FP will disappoint and frustrate you at every turn. Maybe a trip to Disneyland instead?
Bon chance!
