Is the Sheraton within walking distance of downtown Papeete? If so, how far? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

You can walk from the Sheraton to downtown but they do provide a boat shuttle every hour back and forth. They do not have the service on Sunday since there is not much going on in town.

Thanks for the reply Pacific Andy. Does Le Truck stop at the Sheraton, also? Do you know how long it would take (approximately) to walk to the downtown area from the hotel? I'm just trying to decide whether or not to book a hotel downtown (Hotel Tiare, or Le Mandarin). I get the impression that downtown Papeete can be noisy, so I thought the Sheraton might be a little quieter. The Beachcomber sounds nice too, however I don't anticipate that we will be spending too much time at the hotel, so I don't know if it's worth it to stay at a resort. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

The boat shuttle starts about 11AM and goes back and forth a few times a day. Le Truck was much easier to catch - they go by the Sheraton about every 10 minutes or so. It's about a mile or two to get downtown, but it's not a very scenic walk and the weather is quite warm. The cost is about $1.20 each way. Tahiti Tiare is fine, costs about half as much as the Sheraton but does get noisy as it is on the main street. Papeete is fun to walk around, shop, eat, people watch...

Yeah, the walk is over a mile. We took Le Truck to Papeete one afternoon, knocked around the market, ate lunch, shopped, had some Hinanos. We ate dinner from the little truck-stands on the dock, and then walked back to the Sheraton. Not so bad after the sun goes down, but the walk was still pretty warm!
