We will be in Tahiti end of March, arriving from Canada. We have booked at the Hiti Moana Villa for 4 nights pre cruise. Is there anyone out there who has stayed there? Comments??

We just got back from FP yesterday. We stayed at Hiti Moana Villa our last 2 nights. Steve, the owner, is very nice and accomodating. He let us stay untill we needed to catch our pm flight w/o charging extra for a day room. The pension is very clean and modern (for a pension) there are wood floors and ceiling fans. They have nice landscapeing and they even have a cute little koi and turtle pond. You can take the canoes and kayaks out in the lagoon over the coral reefs to see sea life. Try to get a lagoon view bungalow with a kitchen. My husband and I almost never cook while on vacation, but it would be nice to make breakfast. The only negatives we have on the place is that its not close to restaraunts or markets so you will need to rent a car and there is a lot of road noise. Hope this helps and have fun!

Thank you "jet lagged" I was under the impression that there were only 4 bungalows, and they were all on the lagoon, and all had kitchens. Is this not the case. As for transportation, does the La Truck get out that way?

There are 4 new bungalows, 3 of which have obstructed views of the lagoon; all are very nice. There is a large bungalow by the pool overlooking the lagoon & then there is a unit with I think 3 attached bungalows w/lagoon views of the coastline. I think the 4 new units only have refrigerators but I cannot say for sure. They are using the new buses out on that end of the island. If your french is good you can probably get a good interpretation of the schedules. My husband, however, could not figure out the transfer process & ended up walking the last 4km from the interchange. If you are relying on public transportation, be prepared to adopt the Tahitian life style of waiting around indefinitely. Steve directed us to a car rental location and we rented a compact for a day for about $55. It was well worth it since it allowed us to see the north side of the island which is very beautiful. Especially Tahiti Iti with its black sand beaches & numerous waterfalls viewable from the road this time of year. We did try the one restaurant within walking and must say; "never again".

Thank you again "jet laggged" Hopefully you are getting over it now. Was the Restaurant that bad?, or no selection. We will have a kitchen unit, (hopefully with fridge), so will have to do some shopping. Maybe should email Steve and find out for sure. Don't want to rent a car for too long, maybe a day or so at the most. One thing I read on another site, is that the lagoon is not really good for swimming. Did you find this also?

We have recovered from the jet-lag, but considering that we have a foot of snow on the ground and the temp is -17F we are really missing FP! The restaurant, which Jan Prince toutes as expensive and gourmet, was the only one within walking distance. The food was just ok and we like taking 2+ hours for dinner but after waiting 40 minutes after dessert and still not seeing our server we actually walked to the kitchen to get our bill! We were the only couple dining that evening... May be this was an isolated incident. Anyway, renting a car was very inexpensive ($65 US) and you should drive around Tahiti iti and see the black sand beaches and waterfalls. We did'nt swim in the lagoon although it looked as if the snorkeling would have been good --we just ran out of time...

Thanks for all your help "jet lagged" now "wannagoback". You have been a great help. Hopefully you can go back again soon and miss all the "good" weather you've been having. Here in British Columbia, the weather has been stellar. Lots of sunshine and warm weather. Still looking forward to FP though.

We must have overlapped "jet-lagged" as we stayed at "Hiti Moana Villa" from 2-2 to 2-7. We were in one of the newer bungalows (with only a refrigerator) and our friends were in a kitchenette unit. We agree that the villa is clean with nice landscaping, however, we did find quite a few cockroaches; especially in the kitchenette unit. Sure they're part of the warm and humid climate. The road noise was bothersome, but we didn't spend many awake hours in our bungalow. Also building construction behind us starting at 7:00 a.m., but that should be done before you arrive. Steve is very helpful with all requests. He also let us stay in one of our two units until time for our late evening airport transfer. He arranged a car for us for 2 days, a wonderful 4X4 all day tour, took us to the grocery store and bank, and dropped us off to meet le truck. We kayaked out to the reef area to snorkel 3 times during our stay, and found it to be the best snorkeling of our 15 day stay in Polynesia. Early morning may be best when the lagoon is calmest. Later in the day the winds stir it up. You can view the reef from the kayak the water is so clear. Ditto the comments about going to Tahiti Iti. Be sure to go to the plateau area and the black sand beaches. Check out the blow holes on the northwest side of Tahiti and the tres waterfalls. We never tried to eat out, so can't help you there. We're jealous--our trip to paradise is a pile of pictures to sort, and yours is still ahead of you. Enjoy!

Thanks for your input Kathy. The cockroach thing really gives me the creeps though. We are renting 2 bungalows, 1 with kitchen, so maybe I'll let my sister and brother in law have that one after all. Hopefully Steve knows about this and sprays before we get there. There are not too many bugs that bother me, but spiders and cockroaches are definately at top of the list!! So much for a good nights sleep. We've been to a lot of places in the Caribbean, and have never had an encounter with them there. Does Steve have snorket gear to use? We will probably buy are own before we leave, since they will likely come in handy during our cruise, but just in case, it is nice to know that he has them too.

Don't let the cockroaches ruin your good time. They're just there. Steve has a can of aerosol bug spray in each unit, but the kitchenette unit's can was empty, so maybe that's why they were worse. I didn't see any snorkel gear that Steve had for your use. We went on paid snorkleing excursions on other islands and were glad we had our own gear, as the snorkels were quite antique and fins were not provided. We also took a couple underwater disposable cameras which gave some good shots. If you plan to buy groceries, it may be a good idea to have a small french dictionary handy unless you know the language. A few times we were not quite sure what we were purchasing. French bread and fresh fruits were main staples.
