We are spending one night on Tahiti..where is a good place to go for dinner with a "water" view? Preferably something outside.

Give the roulottes a try. These food carts are outdoors right in the downtown section of the harbour. They have tables and chairs and many local people eat there, too. They even have spanking clean new restrooms at one end and a concert pavillon at the other end.

If you want something very nice try Coco's. It will be about $100 to $125 for two but its one of the best restaurants in Tahiti. Outdoor on the beach and very nice.

I second the Coco's recommendation. Excellent food. We found that we always have a better table when we ask the hotel to make our reservations for us. Cocktails on the lawn beforehand is great.

Our flight back to the US leaves us in Papeete with about 6 hours to
kill (6:00 pm onward). Would Cocos be a good option once we've found a place
to leave our bags? Reservations needed?

You will need reservations and the restaurant is about 1/2 hour from the airport. I would pre arrange for the taxi to pick you up when he drops you off at the restaurant. The taxi fare one way will be about $40 bucks. So maybe dinner at the Sheraton Hotel, Beachcomber or Belevedre maybe easier.
