We will be taking a cruise on the Tahitian Princess in July. We have to daughters, 15 and 20, who will be coming also. We will be in Tahiti 3 days before the cruise leaves. I am leaning towards staying at the Beachcomber...please tell me your thoughts. What type of room should we get? Any specific activites you can suggest? Have you seen "families" traveling in French Polynesia or just couples?

Hello --

We had a dayroom at the Beachcomber after disembarking the PG in March, and I saw quite a few families (although most seemed European). These were people with grade school kids mostly. I didn't see a whole lot of teenagers there, though. They have a lot of daily activities (how to make necklaces, tie pareos, dance, etc) and the usual excursions and free stuff like snorkels and kayaks. Lagoon was really nice there - we were very pleasantly surprised, enough so to seriously consider staying a few days next year when we return.

The Beachcomber is a very nice place, better than the Meridien now since its renovation (we were there precruise). It has terrific pools and a lagoonarium. We had a Panaramic view room - this is a room in the new building built a few years ago and it was pretty as well as huge = wood floors, large soaking tub, canopy bed. Steps to the freshwater sandbottomed infinity pool, which has a great view of Moorea.

One more plus - it's a very short ride into town for alternatives for meals (a few km on Le Truck, which is really easy to use), although we had two meals at the Beachcomber and both were reasonable (by Tahiti pricing) and tasty.

Enjoy your stay!!

definately take le truck into town and walk along blvd. pomare and stop at the roulottes for dinner.

take them to the waterfalls, the eastern side of the island towards the black sand beaches.

There are always families in FP, although like the above poster mentioned, mostly European families. Tahiti seems to market heavily to the US and Japan towards honeymooners, but Europeans and French know it as a wonderful destination for everyone, therefore, you will find all types of people there.

Stutzick,
We are also taking our kids but they are younger than yours and we wanted them to stay in our room. It was not easy finding accommodations for a family of four in peak season (July/August) but your daughters are old enough to have adjoining rooms instead of sharing. Are they looking forward to the trip?
We hope to keep traveling with our kids for as long as we can (until they trade us in for younger travelling companions!). Enjoy your family cruise and please write a trip report; I'll be anxious to read about travelling with teenagers!

Two years ago we took our then 18 year old son on the R4 cruise for his graduation present, we had gone the year before(my husband and me) and that's all I talked about(how I fell in love with French Polynesia). So my son said, he'd like to go. I honestly wasn't sure if he'd like it. Boy! was I wrong. It was his favorite vacation ever, he can't wait to go back! There are plenty of things to do on every island or as little to do if your teens just want to relax on the beach and snorkle. How can they not enjoy it, after all this is truly paradise!

We have not taken our children, but saw many who had and they had a great time. Just remember, FP is not a destination resort type atmosphere with rides and attractions like Orlando, but if your children enjoy the water, they will have a great time.

Okay, I'll be the spoil sport.....Tahiti is NO PLACE FOR CHILDREN!!!!!
If your take your children there....they will have no concept about what a special place it is.......Tahiti is for honeymooners and anniversary celebrations!!! For the record, My husband and I are 50+...we have children and grandchildren whom we love very much, but........Tahiti is for ADULTS!!!

I think that is how 'you' would like it, but you are quite mistaken. There is something for everybody in Tahiti.

I feel so sad that your children and grandchildren would get absolutely nothing out of being in Tahiti.

I agree, bix!
Terry, our family trip to FP actually entails visiting with friends in Papeete so that their kids and ours can play together again.
By the way, my children DO have a concept of what special places there are in the world. They are sooooo looking forward to dancing and to eating poisson cru just like they looked forward to climbing Macchu Picchu, whale watching in Vancouver, admiring Georgia O'Keefe pastels in Santa Fe, canoeing in Minnesota, dancing tango in Buenos Aires or even smiling at the Mona Lisa in Paris. They dream of visiting Tokyo and Bethlehem among other places. Need I say more?

I think it's a complete misconception that Tahiti is "for honeymooners, anniversaries and ADULTS only." I've regularly traveled to Tahiti for over 20 years, bringing friends & family as well as traveling solo and have had wonderful times exploring the islands. Whether or not children appreciate it or not depends on their attitude. If vacation means staring at a TV or constantly being entertained, well.....
Anyway, my kids always have a great time and by traveling they have cultivated their own sense of adventure.
