Just a suggestion. This place is a bit away from Papeete, but truly worth the 85 or so bucks for a bungalow with a kitchen. Sleeps 4 (double bed in separate bedroom, and 2 single beds (couches during the day) in the sitting room. The place is called the Hiti Moana Villa, right on the lagoon. (just type it in on your favorite search engine). The owner is Steve Brotherson, and he is absolutely wonderfully helpful. We stayed there for 3 nights prior to our cruise in April, and if I ever go back, I would definately stay there again. There is a restaurant within walking distance, but we cooked all our meals in our bungalow. Steve took us to the grocery store at no extra cost, took us to the car rental place, also at no extra cost. There is a very nice pool on the grounds, excellent snorkeling (bring your own gear), and he has kayaks to use (again free of charge). I can say that I actually enjoyed staying there better than I enjoyed the cruise. Worth checking out.

Anyone who says FP is for adults only, doesn't understand the polynesians at all. The polynesians are kind, generous, loving people to everybody, including children. Vacationing children may not be welcomed by other guests at a resort, but they will be welcomed, hugged and treated with genuine kindness and respect by the polynesians. It is not the polynesian way to segregate children, and adults who are bothered by that probably should choose a different travel destination.

lovetotravel, we like you!! We have always traveled with the kids and they have learned a lot about other cultures not to mention the priceless memories of great family vacations. They even want to be the ones posting a trip report on this forum upon our return.... 53 days to go!

Happy, maybe YOUR kids would enjoy Disneyland better, but I can tell you that I have seen the JOY on little kids face as they float in the lagoon and point out little fishies or see baby stingrays dart across the sand.
It's also a wonderful place for them to truly enjoy the sealife and to gain a wonderful appreciation for that.
I feel so sorry for parents who simply cannot see that. What a closed little world they must live in.

Nope, happitiki, they go to Disneyland, Legoland, Sea World and Magic Mountain every year with their summer camp and absolutely love it but, believe it or not, they can't wait to snorkle all day or swim with turtles or feed the sharks or eat poisson cru (which they love!). Actually, daughter is a Paul Gauguin fan and wants to learn more about him so we'll try to take her to places that will answer some of her questions.

OR EVEN BETTER...TAKING THEM TO DISNEYLAND WOULD MEAN BIG MONEY SAVINGS. GIVE THEM THAT MONEY AND WATCH THEIR FACES!!!
I KINDA AGREE, IF YOUR KIDS ARE INTO ARTS, PAUL GAUGUIN AMONG OTHER FRENCH ARTISTS WOULD CERTAINLY HELP DEVELOP SKILLS, BUT YOU DON'T NEED TO GO FP FOR THAT.

Disneyland, etc., is probably easier on the parents as it's pretty much a no brainer. Lots of stimulation. I challenge you however, looking back on trips you took as a kid -- was it really the Disneyland or Epcot that you remember, or was it the special time of adventure that you were able to share with your parents and siblings. I personally remember early trips to foreign lands best.
