Hello- I am looking for recommendations for day hotels on Tahiti (not terribly far from the airport)and approximate rates. If anyone has any experiences they can share that would be great. Thanks!

Hi,
Unfortunately my experience is negative :-(.
I just did a dayroom at the Beachcomber coming off the Paul Gauguin.
Granted that the experience may be a bit worse for someone in a group like this, the land agent, Tahiti Nui Travel are pretty inept, so you might do better on your own. But here's the scoop:
- we had a day room starting at 3 p.m. (it was just a normal room, not an over-water bungalow, but it did face the ocean). - the room was very warm, and the air-conditioning was inadequate to say the least--the OWB might be better - food and drink seem pricey. We had a buffet lunch that was included with our stay, but the bill read $44 per person--food not worth it, definitely. Drinks like pina coladas were something like $12. The draft beer was fairly cheap. - the public areas of the hotel are open to the weather. This can be a good thing, or a bad thing, depending on whether you're ready for a nice cool rest. - the public areas of the hotel are completely unlike anywhere else I've been in the islands--really fake and touristy. - nice pools to swim in if you want to do that.
All in all, I hated this hotel (spent time there twice now).
Next time, we will do our own dayroom, probably the Royal Tahitien. It's farther by cab, so a bit expensive to get to, but the rates are lots better, it's nice and quiet, and the air-conditioning works.

We had a day room at the Shearton and it was very nice, but then we had just come from a pension in Rangi, so it did feel a bit like the Ritz to us at the time. Its very close to the airport, only five minutes drive.
They let us stay an extra two and a half hours at no extra charge, but this might have been because it was quiet (we were there in March). I think we paid around 100 UK Pounds (150US), but this included transfers two and from the airport which I think are a fair bit more than a cab.

Wendy, when where you at the Beachcomber? I just got back on Friday and had a standard room and the AC worked great, almost to cold. And I am not sure about your comments about a $12 Pina Colada, thats about the going rate at every hotel in FP. The prices seemed fair considering its Tahiti and the dollar is so weak. I am just not sure what you expected from any of the hotels in Tahiti. All the hotels are touristy to some extent. I think when you come off any of the cruises you are a little shocked by the accomodations and prices of the hotels, but you do pay for it on the cruise as well.

We are the Beachcomber on April 26th.
Well of course we had just gotten off the Paul Gauguin, where all drinks are paid for :-)
But we had had a very nice pre-cruise stay at the Royal Tahitien, which is not really touristy at all (for a hotel), where everything was reasonably priced, friendly and relaxing.
As for the A/C. Glad to know that perhaps we just got a bad room, or hit the hotel on a bad day. I still would never stay there again, unless I had absolutely no choice.

Im also curious why you consider Tahiti Nui Travel inept, when it seems the hotel itself and your experience therein was not to your liking.

Well, it's not a big deal. I understand about "island time", and since everybody in Polynesia is so friendly and nice I can live with it.
But, we have done the Paul Gauguin cruise twice now. Tahiti Nui Travel handles all the land arrangements. Obviously such business is their bread and butter. Most arrangements when they are straightforward like taking a bus from A to B are handled smoothly, but they seem incapable of efficiency at sorting airport arrivals to their appropriate day-hotels before the cruise, or handling day room registration at the hotel.
The way Radisson plans it is this: the day of the cruise, if you are arriving at Fa'aa from other islands or elsewhere, you are bussed to a day hotel. Which hotel depends on your stateroom category. Standing around the airport waiting for the agents to dither about who goes where is what happens. In fact, we ended up at the wrong hotel last time, and our "free" lunch failed to materialize. Getting busses organized to the cruise ship was also a nightmare of dithering.
The day the cruise ends, for those on late flights, dayrooms are arranged as well, available at 3 p.m. After a complimentary buffet lunch, the single agent in charge of assigning the rooms and handing out the keys was singularly inept. I don't blame her individually, but when you have 30 rooms to assign, and a single person collecting credit card info, and handing out keys, we ended up with a revolt. It was kind of funny actually, but TNT could have smoothed it so easily by just being a bit organized.
I hate complaining, especially after such a great holiday. But that's the reality. I'm pretty laid back about stuff like this, but as I'm sure you know, standing around in Tahiti usually means standing around in the heat.

We had no problems with this agent they handled all our land ops, all went without a hitch and when we were faced with a flash strike at moorea airport, the company they had contracted our transfer to. Helped us get the Ferry back to Tahiti. I'm sorry, I know its a big taboo on this board to mention other agents, but I just wanted to mention they were ok for us.

You know, I have appreciated every single one of Wendy's posts, but in EVERY one she was HOT, like in too warm, sweaty. I don't think most of us have this reaction to FP...

Hmm, you're right. Sorry about that. I have hot flashes these days, so I guess I find the heat a bit hard to take.
Here's a counter-post then--when we stayed at the Pearl Beach Manihi 3 years ago (almost to the day!), I was quite happy to have a beach-front room with just a ceiling fan. In fact, with the trade-winds blowing in, we didn't even have the fan on!
So, no more about the heat, I promise!
Wendy
