RE time to spare in Tahiti, my suggestion would be a pension called Chez Armelle, about 20 minutes from the airport. It is friendly, clean, not luxurious but comfortable, and situated on a nice white sand beach with great snorkelling and/or kayaks. Overnight rate app $85.00 w. bkfst, so don't know what a day rate would be. Much nicer location than most (any?) of the hotels on Tahiti. Hotel in same area is Le Meridien, but don't know if they do day rooms.
