Anyone experienced when it comes to either hotel or have pics posted in the trip reports/portfolios? We are interested in spending our last one or two nights on Tahiti as a refresher before we make the thirteen hour flight back home and would like to spend it in a nice hotel. We aren't crazy about overwaters on Tahiti, since we'll be in overwaters on Moorea and Bora Bora so that's not important. We are leaning on the Sheraton just cause it looks newer and cleaner and also since we're staying at the Sheraton on Moorea maybe we can get a package deal? Any advice, experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. : )

Either hotel is great but I would lean more towards the Beachcomber. At the beachcomber the rooms have all been redone in the last year and the Panaramic Standard rooms are great. The main problem with the Sheraton is the staff. They are clueless. I have stayed there in the last two years four times and every time its a major problem with A) the reservation and B) the rate. The staff in the restaurants and bar are about the worst in Tahiti. And dont get me started on the knucklehead pool boy they have.

Hi, PA. I just read your comment about the Sheraton. I did a search on the hotel earlier, and it seemed like everyone liked it. We're staying there the last two nights of our trip. ATN canceled their Wed. nite flight to Thurs. nite and is picking up the tab for our extra night. So, when you say the staff doesn't have a clue, do you think this might be a problem???? We always stay at the Sofitel, and though they're accomodating, they don't handle "changes" well. Is there someone you can recommend that is efficient? All we have is a reference number from our TA that ATN gave her. From your experience with the hotel, what can we expect?

Both the Beachcomber & Sheraton are fine. The Beachcomber is generally a bit more expensive than the Sheraton. I've never had a problem wihle staying at the Sheraton and I haven't found the staff to be any better or worse than at the Beachcomber. While I like Papeete and think it gets a bad rap, I don't find the service at any of the large hotels on the island to be remarkable. Unless they know or recognize you, it's fairly lackluster. I prefer the restaurant at the Sheraton but the pool at the Beachcomber is nicer. I would choose the Beachcomber or Sheraton over the Sofitel.

You will be fine at the Sheraton its just the staff does not seem to care too much about anything. I find the staff much much better at the Beachcomber in Tahiti. Like I said I have stayed at the Sheraton at least four times in the the two years and I always get the same feeling. Heck my Tahitian friends in Papeete wont even go there for drinks because of the horrible service. The bar is decorated nice. Dont worry about the hotel and go enjoy Tahiti. Check out the market, have dinner at the roulettes, drive around the island. Its a great island.

Well, I'll just chime in with my pitch for the Royal Tahitien.
It's smaller, not touristy. The rooms are clean and nice, although not glamorous. The hotel is small, but it has a nice bar and great food at the restaurant, both overlooking a black sand beach.
It's a nice place to just relax for a day or two, and it's not as pricey.
My only small complaint was the the room smelt a wee bit musty when we arrived. The air conditioning (which was very efficient), took care of that. The staff were all laid back but pleasant, and I would definitely go back.
I've stayed at the Beachcomber, and I personally hate it. It's like Epcot's version of Tahiti. The RT wouldn't be everyone's taste either.
Just my opinion, Wendy

Thanks for the input, everyone. We have stayed at the Beachcomber (the Park Royale then) several times. It is a great hotel, but the staff also has a "reserved" attitude towards the guests. Same at the Sofitel, even after 12 years. It's true, the service on Tahiti is not as good as the other islands. However, my husband (OpuNui) can always get the girls laughing, so we get along okay. We're defineatly going to try the roulettes this year. Never had time before!

Here is information from our agent. This is a letter from the Sheraton management about the strikes in Tahiti and Moorea Any typos are probably mine, since the original was copy protected and I have retyped it here.
"Tuesday May 13 2003
Dear Partners,
At midnight last night a number of associates at the Sheraton Hotel Tahiti and the Sheraton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa commenced a work stoppage.
As of this morning operations at both properties continue as normal although some services have had to be modified at the Sheraton Hotel Tahiti.
. Breakfast is served as normal . Lunch and dinner will be served "a la carte" from the coffee shop menu at the Moevai overwater restaurant. No buffet will be available. . In-room dining has been temporarily suspended . Poolside service is available as normal
At the Sheraton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa all services are available as normal.
We are presently unable to determine the exact duration of the industrial action, however, negotiations are ongoing in the hope of a swift resolution.
Further updates will follow as and when the information comes to hand. In the meantime, should you require any further information or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact any member of the Sales & Marketing or Reservations team.
Many thanks for your understanding."

This is in response to the strikes by the Beachcomber and the Sofitel a few weeks ago. In Tahiti you can not strike until you work for at least, and I am not positive on this, two years. I think the official soft opening of the Sheraton Moorea was 2001 May. So they are going after the same benefits as the other two Hotel. The Pearl Should be fine from this type of actions since it just openend last year. It should go pretty quick and I think the knew it was going to happen.

I just talked to my TA and advised most of the workers have accepted what was offered and there so be no problems. It should all end very soon. But both Tahit and Moorea Sheraton are still open and running
