It's June 12, does anybody know if the itinerary has been determined yet? It's getting pretty close to festival time and I can almost hear them thar drums. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't have much reliable info, but last I heard from my local friends on Moorea, the Heiva festivites have been delayed until July 25, when Pres. Chirac arrives. Again, not sure how true this is, and I personally think it's terrible news, because I think a lot of people were planning to be there in early July, when it normally happens. I hope someone more knowledgeable than I updates us on this! Please say it ain't so!

It seems like they changed the dates of the festival again to
July 29 to August 3(found this in the "Tahiti Offical Web Site").
This means that the usual month long festival is now condensed to one week. What's with that????? Is it goning to have the same flavor? To me it seems like a rip off to the people of Tahiti just to please Chirac!

I think that is really unfair to everyone who might have booked non-refundable air tickets in advance for those days, they probably also booked hotels at high season rates and have been looking forward to it all year. I love dancing and want to attend this festival sometime when we can afford it. Unless Chirac is a big Tahitian dance fan, and specifically wants to see every single competition, I don't see what the point is. They could have put on a special evening concert just for him in an elegant setting with the best food available.

Calling blueman. Awhile back you had stated that you had a friend who worked at the tourist bureau in Papeete. Is it possible to get in touch with him and find out when and where we can get an itinerary for the festival? To me it's amazing that there isn't any news of this event and we are almost a month away. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

We just e-mailed our friend in Papeete asking for an update and we will post a reply with the info. He is still under contract to photograph Chirac's visit for the Tahitian Tourist Board but he did say that the dates were subject to change.
30 days to go !

My friend said that Chirac's daughter had just visited Papeete to review the revised Heiva Festival schedule. My friend was told once again that the dates are still up in the air. There is another meeting this Wednesday in Papeete to see what dates Chirac thinks he can visit. The Tahitians seem to be taking it all one day at a time....
20 days to go!

I only skimmed over this thread, so I hope that my info is relevant...All I know is that The festival started in Bora Bora on June 27th, and runs for a month or so....I was there when it started, although I'm unfortunately back in the US now. Anyway, I don't know for sure about Tahiti, but it's in full swing in Bora Bora. Hope that helps, and I'm sorry if you already knew that...

OK, this may help. I just got my Tahiti Beach Press and this info is from Jan Prince's article in it. Festival of Songs and Dance July 29th to August 3 on the Papeete Waterfront. Tel 50 31 00 for ticket info
Outrigger Canoe Races - July 25th to August 3 - Te Hano Nui - The Big Party July 26th 7 to 10 p.m. at Pater Stadium in Pirae

Heiva in Moorea Fairgrounds in Poa Poa beside Cooks Bay July 11, 14 and 19th and August 2nd and 3rd - Begins 7:30 P.m.

Heiva in Bora Bora events begin June 27th check local times and events - Jacques Chirac will be in Bora Bora July 27 and a big event is planned.

This information is not confirmed so you would need to check.

PA Do you need to buy tickets in advance for the dance and song events? Is it open sitting or assigned? What is the capacity venue to watch the various events? Since they have a ticket phone number, do they have a daily itinereary? I really would like to see the fire competition.
Going to the other events(sports, weaving etc.), will they be constantly crowded? I guess if you could describe the experience itself, it could give us a better idea on how to prepare for it?
