We will have one night in Papeete before going to Moorea and are trying to decide between the Sheraton and the Sofitel, Sofitel is about 20 AUD pp cheaper through a travel agent, but they have a good deal on the internet that includes breakfast. Is it a real breakfast or just bread, fruit and coffee? Also, do Le Trucks really run at night-we want to go into town for clubbing but don't want to pay a taxi to get back. Which hotel is prettier and which one has a better dance show? Thanks.

Oops, I forgot to mention that we are not normally upmarket travellers but backpackers. Last time I was on Tahiti as a single I stayed at Teamo Hostel. We just want a bit of luxury on this one night and free access to a Polynesian show and to be near the beach. The ritziness of the room isn't a big deal, location and ease of getting a good deal is more important. Sofitel has a good deal on their website, Sheraton is considerably more. Breakfast being included could be a deciding factor, seeing the normal cost of breakfast in Tahiti. The only way to get a good deal on the Sheraton is to go through a travel agent which is also a hassle since they don't like doing land only and put a surcharge on. None of the travel agent packages include breakfast or other meals. We normally travel light enough to walk from the airport. The plan is to hang out at the airport until daylight, walk to the chosen hotel to drop our bags (if they won't let us into the room straight away) then head downtown to see the marche. We will then have the whole afternoon to enjoy the resort facilites before heading to Moorea the next day. We are using frequent flyer points to get to Tahiti from Brisbane. We have chosen Moorea Village on Moorea for the rest of the stay. Travel agent price and internet price roughly the same there. I did a search and everyone seems to sing the praises of the Sheraton and diss the Sofitel so I am wondering why? Beachcomber and Le Meridien are a lot dearer and the locations harder to get to.

I don't know about the Sofitel, but we stayed at the Sheraton for one night on the way back. After staying at Moorea Village and some other places. It was very nice, we did not use many of the resort facilities as we just wanted somwhere to crash for a few hours before our overnight flight home. It was a nice treat, the room service was good, the air con worked and the shower was great. It was pretty close to the airport, but it would not be that much in a cab I imagine. We got a cab from the ferry to the airport at one point and it cost about 12 uk pounds. I'd have no problems recommending the Sheraton for a one night stop. We stayed at the Tiare Tahiti Hotel on the way out, in the centre of Papeete, it is budget, but clean and breakfast was included. It also had aircon, we found it useful on arrival. Didn't need it on the islands, but Papeete was hot, hot, hot in March !

You will love Moorea Village, we had a great time.

Well as you say your not usually an "upmarket" traveller the Sofitel would be fine. If you where an "upmarket" I would not do the Sofitel. The Sheraton is much nicer and closer to town. The Sofitel is getting old and they are going to shut it down soon for an extensive remodeling. The Le Truck do go at night but the schedule is reduced. You maybe able to go in with the Le Truck but maybe coming back with a cab. They do have a stop right in front of the hotel.

go to the sofitel. It LOOKS like a resort. The sheraton looks like it could be on a plantation in Coral Gables Florida.

Most Americans consider anything over 5 years old to be in shambles and dis repair, Europeans tend to let it ride more with the aging of a place. Since you are on the lower budget circuit, and are used to more 'authentic' accoms, the Sofitel will be fine and a nice treat for you.

It may look good on the photo but if it was in such a good shape they wouldnt be closing it for over a year for refurbishing. Beside the hotel was built in the early 80's. Its not a great hotel but if your not expecting too much and saving money it will be fine.

Thanks, everyone. The Sofitel does look attractive, and if they are going to close it for renovation, all the more reason to see it in its original state. Maybethey want to cater to the upmarket American clientele , but it is a shame if they destroy the character of the place.

Has anyone eaten breakfast at the Sofitel? Is it a buffet or "continental"?

It wasnt all that great to begin with. I love old Tahitian architecture and art but the hotel has a mix of the 70's

We stayed at the Sofitel briefly, back in 1999. We arrived early morning on the ANZ flight and stayed there prior to taking the ferry to Moorea the next morning. I thought it was a bit run down, but it was more than adequate for a one-night stay. We also used it as a day room prior to returning on the early morning ANZ flight.

As I recall, the breakfast at the outdoor restaurant was a buffet. I thought it was pretty good. As is usual in French Polynesia, there was plenty of fresh fruit, croissants and bread, and an omelette chef to make eggs/omelettes to order. I think it was around 1500 cpf at the time.

I stayed at the Sofitel on PPT in Nov 2002. It was a fine resort/hotel. The rooms are not outdated, in my opinion. The breakfast was served buffet style and a good bargain if you get it included in your room rate.

Hope this helps.
