Looking for a place to rest my head for 2 nights before I catch the late plane home. Don't really need one of the major hotels, but do need to be fairly close to airport and Papeete, so as not to have to rent a car. (By point of comparison, I'll be happily returning from Club Bali Hai Moorea . . . and I speak French OK)
The Tahiti Country Club looks good from what little is on the internet - but who knows how old the info is.
Anybody familiar with the place?

Ahhh, the Tahiti Country Club. Lucky for you it has been closed for a couple of years. It was by far the worse place in Tahiti. I was there about 12 years ago and it was similar to a day room for hookers and drug addicts. Filthy place and the people running it where even worse. It is amazing they stayed open for 10 more years. I am sure others can help you with cheaper accomodations near the airport, but thank god this place is off the map.

I stayed one night at the Tiare Tahiti in Papeete. It was fine, basic, but clean with aircon and a decent breakfast. I think the room was about 120 Euro, but it included breakfast for two.

Thanks, PA. One never can trust what one sees on the internet. I think I'll just bite the bullet and stay at one of the chain hotels.

Sofitel has a rate of 17650 XPF weekend-bank holiday rate on their website-it includes breakfast. Breakfast would normally be about $20 USD each! On the night I wanted, it was more for a double bed, but if you look at the other room types you can probably get 2 twins for that rate-unless you are honeymooners, you might want to pay the extra! This is only slightly more than the downtown mid-range hotels. If you travel light, you should be able to walk to the airport.

Walk to the airport? Thats pretty far from the Sofitel to the airport. I would recommend the Le Truck.
