I'm trying to decide which property to reserve for our stay on Tahiti. My travel agent is quoting the same price for both the Sheraton and the Intercontinental. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Both are nice. We stayed one night at the IC and had dinner one night at the Sheraton. The bouillabaisse at the Sheraton was awesome. It was a meal in itself. In fact, it was so much, I could not finish it.

Are you planning on staying on Tahiti a long time, or just a day while you coming/going to other islands? We stayed overnight at the Intercontinental Beachcomber and found it to be okay. The room was on the small side and the hallway you had to walk down to get to our room was extremely unattractive. It was okay as a stopover place to stay, but I would not recommend it as your primary destination. We did not go into the Sheraton, but it looked nice from the outside. We had a day room at the Sofitel Mauva Beach and I definitely would NOT recommend the property. Service was terrible and the upkeep was horrible. Very shabby.

I'd say book the Intercontinental, join the Six Continents Club and work the overwater bungalow upgrade.

The Beachcomber is a little more Tahiti and the Sheraton is more Hawaii. Sheraton is closer to Papeete central but I like the Beachcomber better. The Horizon hotel rooms are great.

IC overwater??? not worth the time in my opionion - just got back from 2 nights there (shopping days) and had lagoon room 218. Great view, and didnt get the Crane ubstructed view. From what the signs all over the property said - they were repairing major storm damage and had two giant cranes directly in front of the lagoonarium and right in the middle of the lobby view. the lagoon room was nice though....save your upgrade for bora bora or moorea..

Well, once you pay for the Six Continents club, ($150) you are supposed to get a superior room upgrade anytime you stay at an Intercontinental and people here have been saying it works. So you aren't spending anything extra to get the upgrade really. It's $150 for a 1 year membership and $50/yr renewals. Seems like a good deal to me. I'm wondering why I haven't seen any cranes on the webcam: http://www.thetahititraveler.com/multimedia/webcam.asp Wait, now I do see a crane after comparing it to the fixed daytime image (I only have computer access at night). It looks like it is between the lagoonarium and the bungalows. Shouldn't obstruct the view of the bungalows. Did they say when they expected to be finished?

In my mind, there is no comparison. Stay at the Beachcomber--and overwater if you can on a Six Continents Club upgrade. The swimming is great--two beautiful pools--and easy access to everyting. Not as close to Papeete as the Sheraton, but a much better experience. I stay there 3-4 times a year.
Enjoy!

Jan have you used the Six Continents upgrade often and how is that working out for you? What room are you booking and what are they upgrading too? Any problems or do they take good care of you?

Dear Submarine:
I used to be a Bonus Card Member there--until the Intercontinental bought the chain. Now I have switched to Six Continents. The rates are excellent. I upgrade from a Panoramic Room (new) at 20.757 XFP to a Overwater Bungalow Motu. for 23.699 XFP. The rate sheet for the OWB Motu (which I have in front of me for 2003) is XFP 52.725. There is also a more expensive OWB Lagoon on the price sheet for XFP 68.820.
And of course, less expensive rooms than any of these as well.
I definitely think this is the best place (in this category) on the island. And since I love the island of Tahiti, I stay here whenever my condo is not available (which is often as it is rented out most of the time).
The service is as good as anywhere. Very friendly. Never had any problems at all except with phones/messages. That seems to be worked out now.
I usually call reservations as soon as possible and try to get fare motu 490-492 (my favorites). I then follow up with a fax--and get a confirmation back from the Beachcomber.
Both salt water and pool swimming is great. I like the OWBs because I swim from my deck many times a day--and there is decent snorkeling not far out.
Hope this helps.
