I will be at Manihi Pearl from March 3-7 and will be diving there. Does anyone have information about the rental equipment there? I will not travel without my own mask but with the weight restrictions on Air Tahiti Nui should I bring my fins or are the rentals good enough? Are the B/C's and regulators in decent condition there?
I will also be diving Bora Bora twice. Is it safe to assume that with multiple dive operations there that the competition between them ensures good rental equipment?
Thanks in advance for your comments.

I would email the dive center with the question on how old the regulators, ect are. You do get extra weight if you have your PADI card. The plane isn't a teeny puddle jumper so it's no worries. They'll let you on the plane if your overweight- you'll just pay for the privilege. Plane is about a 80 seat Saab turbo prop.
The landing in Manihi is hard and abrupt- shortest airstrip in FP. Cyclone washed out a good chunk of the runway, but left enough to make legal landings.

Thanks Justine. I'll make sure that my wife doesn't read this, as she HATES flying and won't like the idea that the runway has been shortened.

Craig - with a C card you get an additonal 11 pounds per person per C card.. Heck our idve bag alone weighed 15 pounds empty, so that wasn't a big help.. We ended up paying $67 (one time fee) for being overweight with our dive gear. You can pay for your entire trip on your first inter-island flight and save quite a bit of money.. Anyways, the $67 was worth it to us to have all our own equipment.. the rental equipment I saw in BB at the Pearl looked to be decent - it would be nice to not have to lug everything around.. but, at the same time, we bought all that stuff, so doesn't make sense to leave it in the closet while on a diving trip, ya know?
That being said, rental BC's and regs appeared to be ok - I didn't hear anyone complaining about them either.. Good luck and have a great trip..

Craig- That's a good idea, but you might want to warn her that most flights will be going back up the runway they landed on. It's always a bit disconcerting. I just don't like doing it in a big jet!

SST:
Thanks for the info about the extra 11 pounds. Is that only the carry on? Or can I go up from 44 lbs in the checked bag to 50, then take 6 more in the carry on?
Thanks for the assistance.

Craig - the extra 11 pounds is for your checked baggage.. Carry ons, if I remember correctly, are not weighed at all, meaning you wouldn't have to split the 11 pounds between carry on and checked baggage.... so generally people try to put their heavy items in their carry on bags. So the additional 11 pounds would only be applied to your checked baggage.. If that's incorrect, somebody please correct me..!

Hello.....I just found this forum and thought perhaps someone could offer us some valuable advise.
We are scheduled for the Tahitian Princess 4/16/07 and are booked on diving excursions in Riatea and Bora Bora.
We recieved our OPEN Water Cert. in August 2006 and our Advanced Open Water in November 2006 and have been on two dive trips to Costa Rica.
I was wondering if anyone has had experiences good or bad regarding dive excursions from the TP. Does anyone know what dive operators TP is using right now? We would like to research these operators in advance if at all possible. Also, we are trying to decide whether we ought to bring our own wetsuits, etc. Any advice?
Any response either negative or positive would be helpful and appreciated.
Thank you in advance of any help...
