I am totally fried as we got back at 3 AM this morning and had to go to work, but I thought people might be interested in some quick remarks about Huahine before I write my trip report. We were there for 18 days and it was NOT long enough. Changes:1. The Te Tiare went through a very expensive renovation the month of Feb. It was rescheduled to open March 3, but we did not go there, so no report. 2. Relais Mahana was scheduled to open March 1. It is not done , but appears that it may be done soon. They were rebuilding the dock and putting in new pilings so the snorkeling was kind of murky. I saw a lot of anemones which I don't remember seeing before. We swam to the Relais from Chez Tara-a great restaurant with a really nice beach ,which is practically next door to the Relais 3. Chez Lovinia-closed for renovations 4. The bakery by the post office no longer exists 5. Fare Potee is a must do. Dorothy Levy is there every day 9-12 except for Sundays.6. There is a new roulotte at the opposite end of Chez Guynette that has good Chinese food. My husband and I would split one order. 7. There is a cute new shop called ViniVonvon- I have the card, but my luggage is in Denver. (I hope it's having a great time.) It's up the spiral staircase close to the Guynette. They have French crepes, ice cream, etc. Also art supplies and fabulous books on French Polynesia. I think they are all in French, but they are gorgeous and a large variety -books such as all of the fish of FP, Books on Rangiroa, learn Tahitian in 24 lessons, etc They also have art work. Friendly people. 8. There are two very nice looking houses to rent on the beach by the Bali Hai which are not expensive, but they only had FP phone numbers that I saw. Maybe they have a website-don't know. You would think in 18 days that I would have better info, but once again, too greedy with my time.9. The Villas Bougainville once again was a delight. Everyday, a groundskeeeper comes and cleans up-raking the fallen leaves, trimming the vast plantings. Raphael is very service oriented businessperson. 10. Our beloved Chez Guynette is the place to go for breakfast and/or lunch. Marty and Moe are so welcoming to visitors to this beloved island 11. Huahine is a immaculate island with crews working constantly cutting back the jungle and repairing any little bump in the road. There are people continually cleaning up in "downtown" Fare. 12. The islanders wave as you pass them in a car. What a gem is Huahine! 13. We checked our luggage with Frontier airlines from Minneapolis to Papeete. That was really great. My husband did have a ticket on his luggage stating that it was lost for awhile, but we did have it when we arrived in Papeete. On the way back, our luggage did not get put on the plane in Denver, but I am confidant that we will get it sometime. For 18 days, I brought 5 swimsuits, 2 pareos, one pair of shorts and one sleevless top. One day I was swimming in Fare ,and when my husband picked me up for dinner, he was talking to a local. I had on a swimsuit with a beach towel wrapped around me. We said that we were going home to change and the local asked , "Why?" He said that I could wear what I had on to the President's house in Tahiti. So, off to dinner we went, although I did find a pareo I had left in the car instead of the beach towel. No problem; my packing was perfect this time.

Thanks for taking the time to send a quick message to all of us. Can not wait to read your trip report. For us it is to bad the little bakery is gone. We have stopped there many of times. The Te Tiare did need some renovations around the pool area but we did not think it was that bad.

I have to add another thing for those of you going soon. I accidentally discovered this as I was swimming at the Fare beach on Friday night. The Hawaiki Nui canoe team practices right there every Friday. Since I was swimming, I don't know the time exactly, but it was in the neighborhood of 5 PM. Although you can see them out on the water every late afternoon, on Fridays they practice their sprints right there. Maybe 6 canoes with the coach in a kayak. Very interesting!

Thanks for the report Holte, it helps me relive the wonderful time we had there. I am sorry to hear that the bakery is closed - I used to enjoy biking to it to pick up baguettes and pastries. We fell in love with Huahine and are hoping we will get to return soon.

Holte~ I have a question to ask. I was wondering if when you stopped by Chez Guynette for breakfast or lunch, if you met an elderly couple staying there. Elizabeth and Carl (Karl?)....I never did get a last name. They are from the Los Angeles area. Have heavy Eastern European accents (maybe German??). Probably at least in their late 70's, most likely in their mid 80's.
I'm just curious, because we met them on the Air Tahiti Nui flight last month. She came over to my seat to watch me do my cross stitch and started up a conversation. We found out they were staying right across the street from us on Moorea (at Motel Albert, we were at Club Bali Hai), and came by our hotel a few times to visit. They were just a completely delightful couple. Their next stop was to be Chez Guynette on Huahine, and then on to Chez Nono on Bora Bora.
I was just wondering if you had the fortune to meet up with them there. They would have been there the same time you were. I regret not getting an address or email from them, as I would have loved to visit with them again sometime. Totally delightful people. I can only hope when we are their age, we have as much spirit, and zest for life and travel as they do.
Because of your great reports about Huahine, it is on our list....but not until '09. We have to get Raimiti out of the way first! So many great places to visit....so little money...so little vacation time!

Yes, I met Elizabeth and her husband-I forget his name. I met them last year when I was there, also. I think they live in Torrance. She is a retired BioChemist and he is a retired electrician. I, too enjoyed them very much. I just can't believe their spirit of adventure.

Yep, that's them. It's great that you did meet them...and last year too...wow. I had a feeling you would have met them if you had stopped by Chez Guynette very often during your stay. Like I said, I hope I have their spirit when I'm their age. Just a couple of super people!
