Yes, they are fishing all of the time. Evening or early morning is best. The locals go out until after midnight. But, you have to be respectful of the fishing as that is their food. My husband once again brought his portable folding rod. He was going to go fishing with some natives, and they wanted him to use one of their rods. He showed them that his little rod could take the big, heavy fish. He was bending it to show them how great it would work and it snapped in half. A great laugh was had by all. They fish with six hooks at once. And you have to know which fish might have cigatura(sp?). You can go out on an excursion ,but you would need the ocean rods which they provide. You can also rent a boat in "downtown" Huahine. It is $100 /day plus gas. It is an aluminum fishing boat. You CANNOT take it outside of the reef. We were told of some people who took one outside of the reef, got caught with a wave, almost died, destroyed the boat and motor and had to buy a new one. When we rented boats a few years ago with a group of people, we ran out of gas and came back in the dark. They sent people out looking for us. God protects idiots because when we found out what we had driven through in the total dark with no lights at all, we were totally sick-the coral heads which somehow we mangaged to miss in the dark. So if you rent a boat, watch the gas. We had four adults in each boat, so that did probably use more gas than normal. We met a 30 year old man from France who had lived in Raitea from ages 3-11. He bought some shrimp at the Super Fare Nui and fished with line wrapped on a stick. He got some fish. Have a wonderful time!

We did see people fishing from the area by the Te Tiare resort. The area was around the south side past Snack Lea.
