A Polynesian couple, Nadia and Fabrice Fourmanoir, have created the first South Pacific resort to offer accommodation in luxurious safari tents similar to those used in the wildlife parks of East Africa. Fare le began in 2005 with 2 spacious canvas cottages on a beach near Fare on the northwest side of Huahine.

A year later, four more units were erected at Parea, near Marae Anini in the southeast corner of the island. Instead of construction concrete structures with energy-hungry air-conditioners, Nadia and Fabrice have used airy tents with hardwood floors, private bathrooms, queen-sized beds with mosquito netting, teak furniture, and high ceilings. In the true Polynesian fashion, a seperate thatched kitchen shelter comes with each unit, and all necessary utensils and provisions need to cook a full "American" breakfast are included in the price.

Airport Transfers, bicycles, kayaks, and snorkeling gear are also provided at no extra cost. Rates at Fare le gegin around 15,000 XPF(US$160) double, or 24,500 XPF(US$260) for one of the 2 extra large grand beach cottages at Parea. Guests can opt for a package which includes a rental car at 4,500 francs (US$50) a day - much less expensive than renting a car separately.

The idea is to make the ecological footprint as light as possible through the use if non-permanent structures and non-motorized nautical gear. In Kenya, the national park authorities have halted the construction of permanent hilltop hotels, which have been shown to influence animal behavior and cause overcrowding. Future Kenyan safari camps will resemble Fare le. Although no such requirements exist anywhere in the Pacific, this small French Polynesian pension shows that there are alternatives to the high-impact mega-resorts. Fare le offers its guests a unique experience, which is sure to be imitated. www.tahitisafari.com

That's great info. I have never seen these at the Fare site and I did not know of the new Parea site. If you google Fare Ie, you can get pictures of these "tents" . I hope someone will stay there and give some info. or at least visit the sites. I am quite sure these cannot be seen by the casual observer. One would have to go down a driveway to see them.

Sorry-didn't see the info you had listed for the website. It's an excellent one and has great pics. Can hardly wait to hear about info from anyone who sees it or stays there.

Yes, holte. The pics look great! Here is the link to the pics:

By the way, the name should be "Fare Ie", not Fare le. Sorry for the typing error.

Hmm...I'm really tempted! We haven't booked our trip yet (we were going to do Villas Bougainville). Holte, what's the view from Bougainville like (especially the smaller accommodations)? From the photos it looks like it's in a bay & there's no colourful lagoon and beach the way Fare Ie seems to be. We're probably staying on Cook's Bay on Moorea so we'll already have a bay view & would prefer beach/pretty lagoon.

You are right. The Villas are not on a beach,. The water is right across a little street, but it is not the beautiful water colors. But there is a nice dock that extends into the water with a little palapa that you can sit under. They do not swim in that area. I brought my lawn chair from the house to sit on the dock. However, Raphael has a new house that is right on the water, so you could ask for that one. It's not the stunning colors of water, but you have the mountain view with rainbows, and a short boat ride to the beautiful water. We did stay in the smaller house one year, and I prefer the other three houses. For us, it's the car and the boat. And of course the house is very nice with the washing machine and full kitchen. Another place that has a beautiful water site is Huahine Beach House, but I don't remember the price. There is a website for it if you do a search. Also, for something that is really inexpensive and on a gorgeous beach, Fare Te Na Toe Toe or something like that. You can find it by doing a search of pensions in Huahine. There are two with similar names. The one in Parea is the one on the best beach. The one in Faie is right by the Pearl Farm and looked good, but the Parea site is on the exquisite water. Someone on this site stayed at the one in Parea if you are interested in reading about it. If you have any other questions, let me know. I have never seen the Fare Ie in real life. Looks good though. There are also two very cute houses for rent on the old Bali Hai site. I only saw phone numbers listed, but maybe they have a website. Very nice yard and beach site.

Our problem is we want a nice beach/lagoon but within walking distance (preferably 1 km or less, but 2 km is doable) to Fare. Any ideas?

I suggest Huahine Beach House which is a couple of blocks from Fare. The house should be on a website, and I can promise you from the outside it looks lovely. It's about 10 feet from the beach. The beach there is great! There are two other houses right there just a little further away-maybe a block, that are new and look just darling. They have a yard so they aren't directly on the beach like the beach bungalows at a resort, but the beach is right there-maybe a 100 feet. The gardens are lovely. I only saw phone numbers listed so I don't know if they are on a website or not. If you are interested, I could maybe find a way for you to get the phone numbers. I think one of the owner's is the woman from Chez Lovinia but I can't guarantee that. The other one was a last name with Puusomething, I think. Aren't I great help? I was always swimming when I was there, so I had no paper etc withme, so that's my excuse.

Thanks, holte. I found some listings for Huahine Beach House, but the price was quoted per week (and we'd probably only stay for 5 nights). It's also a bit more expensive than I was hoping to pay (it would be a great deal for 2 couples, though). We're still mulling things over. Relais Mahana was my first choice when I started researching (funny because it's so far from Fare, but we want a nice beach to snorkel at and figured we could rent a car one day), but I'd been ignoring it because it was closed. Now that it's supposed to be open (or should be soon), we're reconsidering. I feel so wishy-washy! I wish I could make up my mind easier (maybe it's perimenopause, LOL!). And every once in awhile I think of how much we're going to spend on this trip & I panic.
