Hi, I'm in the early planning stages for a solo visit to Huahine and Moorea in late October/early November (+ one week on Easter Island). I'm a 44-year-old woman and I've traveled alone in many parts of the world (West Africa, East Africa, Middle East, India, Nepal, SE Asia, etc. -- listed just to let you know I'm not new at this). :) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just received my guidebooks in the mail, and I'm intrigued by Ariiura Camping. It fits my fantasy of a hut on the beach, and falling asleep to the sounds of the waves (and not the sounds of the neighbors). I'm not troubled by basic accomodations. My requirements for accomodation are: has bed, is clean, has toilet and shower nearby (private is best, but not essential, cold water is fine), is QUIET, and is secure.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's the last point that troubles me a little about the fares at Ariiura Camping. It seems like they're flimsy structures without locks on the doors (but can locks be added?). Now, I don't have any paranoid notions that would-be rapists are swarming the beach. However, I do like to err on the side of caution. Also, though I neither dress provocatively nor act flirtatiously, I've found that some men assume a woman traveling by herself is desperately lonely and begging for attention, and that can sometimes lead to unwanted advances (from locals OR other travelers). I haven't been able to find any blogs or stories written by solo women traveling on Huahine. Are there any posting on this forum? My sense is that women travelers receive little to no hassle, but still -- there's that little voice inside of me telling me to err on the side of caution and find a more secure room. But then again, I'd MUCH prefer a simple hut, with few or no other travelers around, to being lost in a sea of honeymooners or families, and fighting to get sleep when the television's blaring in the next room over.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you haven't guessed, I'm very much an introvert. There's nothing better than sharing a beer with some other traveler *who happens along*, in some out of the way place, and sharing stories, but if that doesn't happen, my own company is fine. I don't tend to like places with lots of other tourists around -- and loud people really annoy me (just being honest).------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, does anyone here have experience with Ariiura Camping? If not, can you recommend other accomodations on Huahine that might give me what I'm looking for? Thanks!
(First post here, and couldn't seem to code paragraph breaks, so I used the dashes to break up the text)

Thank you for the recommendation!
I wish I could edit my original post, but I don't see a way to do that. When I wrote "fare", I was trying to use what I think is the local term for "beach hut", but not say that I necessarily needed to *be* in Fare. I'm not saying you interpreted it that way, travelintom, but I wanted to clarify.
My fantasy is a hut, shack, or bungalow with a view of the sea, with peace and quiet and few others around (and a hammock in front would make the fantasy complete). *That's* what I'd really love to find.

Well, no one can guarantee anything. A meteroite might fall on you, but I can just about guarantee that you won't have any hassles. Aruuria camping is now called Huahine camping. The man who owns it is moving the medicinal gardens of Huahine to his site. The gardens should be ready in about three month's time. Hubert, the owner, is super nice and I am sure you won't have any problems whatsoever. Huahine is really, really safe. As safe as any place that you could find. Another place that you might like, but it is more isolated in that there is really nothing else nearby ,is Pension Te Na Ha To To or something like that. The one that I prefer is in Parea as opposed to Faie. There is a write up about it on this site. Otherwise, you can look up pensions in Huahine and find the info. It's right on the road, but there is so little traffic it doesn't matter. The water there is beautiful, but I don't know about the snorkeling there. Truly, there are no worries in Huahine. At the camping site, there is a snack that you could walk to, but I don't know the hours of operation. You are not far from the Relais Mahana, if that opens when you are there. Another place people like is Rande's shack, which is written about on this site ,and I recall the person talking about a hammack. If you have anymore questions, ask away.

Hi Solo Just came across your post by chance - we are situated on a motu in the lagoon in Huahine & have just opened our small "fare d'hôtes" - with two polynesian fares on the edge of the lagoon - the setting is very quiet (we are the only people living on the motu) & sounded perhaps the type of place your looking for ? If you would like any more info please dont hesitate....

Hi Here is some more info about our fare d'hôtes "Au Motu Mahare" in Huahine..... Motu Mahare is situated in the north east of Huahine (it is the motu opposite the former Sofitel Heiva Huahine). The setting is very natural & quiet - nobody else actually lives on the motu & apart from the sound of the waves & the birds there's very little noise. We have a beautiful white sand beach with crystal clear turquoise water, ideal for snorkelling or kayaking - we have ocean kayaks available free for our guests use.
Our polynesian style fares are on the edge of the lagoon in an authentic coconut plantation, the bedrooms have traditional niau roofs, bed, mosquito net, bedside tables, shelves & hanging space. Each fare has a private bathroom with shower (cold water), washbasin & toilet. There is a fully equipped shared kitchen as well as a local style fare potee /covered outdoor dining area, overlooking the lagoon. The price per night for 1 or 2 people is 6500 CFP, with free car & boat transfers from the airport or the quay in Fare to the motu.
We're currently working on getting some photos online so I'll put up another post shortly with a link to those. Hope this information is helpful, if you have any more questions I'd more than happy to reply.
