Where do you get your inspiration for your travels?

Where do you get your inspiration for your travels? Is it from seeing pictures in glossy magazines? From seeing offers in the travel agent's window? From hearing the tales of others who have traveled? From the internet? Or from somewhere else?
What inspires you to travel?

Because I can and want to do so while I'm still able and young enough to enjoy it. I grew up in Miami and now live in Colorado. I need a beach fix at LEAST once a year.

My Mom's relatives all live in Germany, I was born in Japan (military brat) and we live in Ft Walton Beach Florida until I was 2 years old - then moved to this podunk town in Texas.. Even as early as 4 yers old I had distinct memories of being on a white sand beach, so all my life I wanted to get BACK to the white sand beaches.. Up until the point IO finally started hitting the beaches in '90 or so, I had traveled to Europe 4 times and toured the US extensively in bands in the 80's - so traveling and hotel life was in my blood pretty much my whole life..
Once I finally hit the white sand beach again as an adult, I realized I wanted to be on those beaches as often as possible for the rest of my life.. I have specific places I want to go, like BB, and am crossing them off the list as the years go by.. However, in order to go often, we hit areas in Mexico 60 miles south of Cancun quite often because its so inexpensive.. So, we get the "fix" there in various areas of Mexico, then hit the better, more expensive areas as money permits.. A sit stands, tho, we plan on hitting BB again next year.. I didn't get my fill of the place last year at all..

I'm kinda like Denver- I do it because it's something I just want to do. I was a geography major in college, so I spent a lot of time looking at and creating maps. So, I took what I saw and started turning it into vacations! That and my parents never really traveled when I was growing up (workaholic dad and mom who is afraid to fly), so I have some catching up to do!

I get my inspiration from seeing surreal travel pictures that include tropical or water-oriented destinations, like the picture I saw of Mt. Otemanu on BB when I was just kid. Three decades later I spent my honeymoon there. A year later after our honeymoon, I saw an aerial picture of the Blue Lagoon on Rangiroa. One year later my wife and I were standing in the shallow, pristine waters of the Blue Lagoon. I just watched a DVD of the islands of Greece - uh oh! Anyway, it's the pictures that inspire me.

I'm a reader, so I intentionally pick stories about islands and island life. James Michener got me started with Tales of the South Pacific and it's been turquoise water and white beaches ever since. Friends ask if we'd like to travel to other places and I just can't get excited about anywhere else. I started subscribing to Island Magazine after our 2nd trip to FP. It helps to fill the need in between trips, but nothing is as good as the real thing.

I get my inspiration from everything. I rented "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" last year (ok, its a little embarrasing to admit that) and before the movie was over, I was online finding out about Santorini. Now, I'm only two months away from our two week trip to Athens and Santorini.
My love for FP started when a friend took a leave of absense from our firm. She wanted to go on vacation somewhere warm and asked if I wanted to join her (we were both single at the time). We were at the Century City mall a few days later and saw an ad for Moorea Pearl in the window of a travel agency (the Pearl had just opened). We went in, got the brochure, and booked our trip within the week. I went to FP again on my honeymoon, and have already planned our next trip back for 2008.
My sister, who was a Russian interpreter in the military for many years, is also a huge inspiration. We've gone to Kiev, St. Petersberg, and Moscow. The next trip is Japan (we don't know when yet).

How funny Jells, I was a Geography major in college too.
I probably get my inspiration from 2 sources. First is, I remember since I was old enough to know what a picture was, I would look at my Dad's National Geographic mags. I just loved all the pictures of these far off exotic places. Then...after I became an adult, one of my favorite things to do to relax is read travel brochures in the bath. I go to various travel websites and order them, or stop by travel agents and pick them up. I have a stack of them on the edge of my bath tub. I love to just soak for an hour and read the brochures. Nothing better on a cold night than to crawl into a hot tub, sipping some Grand Marnier, and a reading travel brochure. :-)

Pictures in Magazines and books (History, biographies and autobiographies.) I like to go off the beaten path while on vacation. Trips tend to be to busier places.
