Another question for you Old Wife - how is the motel as far cleanliness and bugs? Can't be that bad, if the trend is to stay there. We stayed at Le Mandarin 6 years ago when we were there, not bad, but the "hourly visitors" knocking on our door by mistake got to be a little much.

I haven't been there yet (we go in November). It's a new hotel since we last went (I think it was built in 2006) so I expect it's fine. Others here have stayed there and it's been described as relatively basic, but clean.

We scoped out this place as a future overnighter before heading to Bora Bora. It's right across from the airport and we could easily walk it with 20kg bags. It's not that steep comparitively speaking, I would say maybe the equivalent of 3 flights of stairs. On a normal trip to Tahiti, we would only have carry on bags, you don't need that many clothes!
