FP is the first part of our 5 1/2 month trip, starting 9/19. One month in FP followed by 2 1/2 months in OZ and 2 months in NZ.
Since we're travelling so long, we won't be staying in the fanciest resorts and with both of us in our early 60's, we don't need the honeymoon suite anymore :-) After reading as much as I could here and elsewhere, these are the places we'll be staying:
9/19-23 MOOREA FARE MITI 9/24-26 Pension Mauarii Huahine 9/27-28 Chez Guynette Huahine 9/29-10/2 Sunset Beach Motel Raiatea 10/3-7 Chez Nono Bora Bora 10/8-11 Tikehau Village Tikehau 10/12-15 Raimiti Fakarava 10/16-17 Tahiti Not sure where yet.
Thanks to everyone at this site who helped with all the useful information. If anyone is planning to stay at the same locations, give us a shout.

I am so envious of you two! What a fantastic trip you have planned. I hope my husband and I can be half as active when we reach our 60's as you two are. Congratulations!

David/Claire,
You have picked all my favorite places to stay! You are going to have a wonderful time!! I'm happy to see people starting to book at Moorea Fare Miti, the old Moorea Village location. We returned from there last week, and it was terrific. We can't wait to read your trip report when you return!

Barbi:
We picked your favorite places because of your recommendations (and others on this forum). THANK YOU all!
Will you post a report on your Moorea Fare Miti stay? Like good places to eat, recommended tours, things to do in that area of Moorea. Also any quirks of Fare Miti like bring your own ....?
Also, I think we are going to stay at Fare Suisse in Papeete for our last night on Tahiti. They pick you up and take you to the airport for free and I think it's pretty close to downtown.

I'll post a trip report on Moorea Fare Miti soon... bring your own towels and bath soap. Bed linens, dish towels, dish soap, and broom are provided. No coffeemakers yet, so maybe bring a small Melitta cone/filter if you don't like making instant coffee. It's not fancy, but it's great!

Barbi: I know how you've raved about Fare Miti. Since we've never been to Moorea, and don't know the island layout too well, would we be better suited being near the 2 bays. Is there more happening in that area? Is it more centrally located to the main tourist sites and restaurants? I know we want to go up the main mountain, see the agriculture station etc. Or, can we just take Le Truck all around and see things? Or, do we need to rent a car? Or will an all-day tour do the trick? Thanks. David

David/Claire,
The area by Cook's Bay also has spectacular views of the mountains and bay, and places like Club Bali Hai in that area have many repeat visitors. In the Maharepa/Pao Pao area of the island, there are many restaurants, shops, etc., within walking distance of the resorts on that side of the island. There are not, however, any nice white sand beaches in that area, and you don't get such vivid turquoise colors of the lagoon from there.
It's a matter of personal preference. I prefer the northwest side of the island, over by Le Petit Village in Haapiti, the old Club Med location, with long white sandy beaches, killer sunset views over the lagoon, and within walking distance as well of many restaurants and shops. Those two areas -- Cook's Bay and Haapiti, are the primary two "main" tourist areas outside of the big resort properties, though neither is really "big."
To get to the Belvedere mountaintop lookout, the agricultural school, the juice factory/distillerie, etc., you will need a rental car or to go on an excursion/tour, no matter which side of the island you stay on. There is no one place where everything is centrally located on Moorea, so it's just a matter of preference.

Ia Orana Barbi,
Just looking at the date you were registered on the forum and the number of postings showing and I'm wondering if there is a mistake on the registration date. Anyhow, keep up the great postings, as you truly do know the place like the back of your hand. I always like to see good info posted for the visitors coming to FP and you do a terrific job. Reading your postings is like painting myself into a picture postcard and being there.
CHEERS!!

Tahiti Online,
Thanks for the kind words! Yes, the registration date is incorrect. This forum crashed earlier this year, and a lot of the old postings were lost, some of us had to re-register, and then Yves corrected our status from "Junior Member" and reinstated the posting numbers. I think I originally registered in 1999 or 2000. We've been traveling to FP since 1994.

Great travel agenda. Hope to hear about your experiences at the Sunset Motel on Ra'iatea. We hope to spend an entire week there in a few years.
