There seems to be availability at two reasonably priced pensions: Fare Maeva for $129 (or $200 with rental car), or Pension Fetia at $100. Any recommendations? We prefered by the beach, bungalow, nice vistas.

I looked on another site and it was in French so I had it translated. The person said that Fare Maeva was on a beach where the reef comes really close to the shore. If that is true, the swimming is not good there. I have not seen Fare Maeva and I think I know where Fetia is. I think Fetia is on the road that goes to the airport and may be kind of off by itself, but I am not sure if that is the place or not. How about Relais Mahana or Te nae Toe Toe (sp?)-either one except I do like the Parea location better, but the one by the Pearl Farm looks nice also. I really wish that someone would write on here who knows about these pensions. There are also the tents which are more like houses.

Actually, Relais Mahana and Pension Mauraii were my first two choices; unfortunately, both are filled. My concern with Pension Fetia was that their English was barely understandable, so if they were a bit isolated, it would be a rough few days for us in trying to communicate. But, in the other hand, Fare Maeva seems to be on a rocky shoreline, so no swimming. I'll check out the Te Nae Toe Toe, and see if that's better. Thanks so much for the advice.

Also think about Rande's Shack if you want an English-speaking host (Rande is American). His 1-bedroom cottage is 9000 XPF per night and is just off the beach (I think his 2-bedroom might be on the beach) and it's a 15-minute walk to town (Fare). We're staying there in November.

When you are in Huahine, I believe the snack Temarae (sp?) has a party boat that goes out into the water in the evening. We never went, but I saw it a couple of nights "downtown" at the dock. It is kind of like a Polynesian pontoon with a palapa roof. There is music and a bar. I don't know if there is food. I just can't believe all of the things I don't do when I am there, but I always say we will do something next year, which we then do. The party boat is for next year for me. Please leave a report on Rande's shack and if you should go on the party boat, that would be interesting, too.
