Glad to hear that you tested the mask prior to going. Much better to find this out stateside than in FP! The Oceanmaster desert dry snorkel is the best $50 I've spent on a vacation item yet. Highly recommended.

I have been reading a lot about the dry snorkel and lots of people on here seem to recommend them. But everyone at the dive shops does not recommend them. They say that they are good for a beginner snorkeler but if you want to free dive under it is harder to clear and just has one more step and part that gets in the way.
Any comments? We didn't get the dry snorkel but I am thinking about it now?

Is this the dive shop which recommended not trying on a mask??
If you were going to scuba I could see how it would be a pain, but I've never had a problem going under the water and clearing it. That's why they put the valve under your mouth- you just blow out once you surface. You'd still have to take the big, full lung blow out with a regular snorkel but you'll be clearing the water up the snorkel tube instead of blowing it out below your mouth. It's not a huge difference , but incredibly nice to have in a windy or choppy lagoon. To each their own I guess...
BTW- buying the neoprene strap cover will save your hair from getting pulled out all week. I so wish I had remembered to buy one before I went!

[Is this the dive shop which recommended not trying on a mask?? ]
haha- good point! although to their defense the mask/snorkel kit they had did have a mask you could try on to make sure it fit.
I just talked to another shop in the area and they have the oceanmaster dry snorkel and said they do recommend it and that it is fairly easy to clear. I most likely will return the one I purchased and see their selection. The one I got is a semi-dry but I noticed the mouth piece is very uncomfortable and if it is like that now I don't want to know how bad it will be after an hour!
Thanks for all the help!

Trav- My faith is partially restored! I can't imagine a dive shop not having something, but then again I've heard of worse. If the mouthpiece is uncomfortable now, it will only get worse. The Oceanmaster does have different sized mouth pieces. The one that came with mine is too big, and also got uncomfortable quickly. I've got pretty small lungs, and could easily clear it. (My English Bulldog has a bigger rib cage than I do.) You should be fine. have a great trip!
