Holte- They'd get a nasty sunburn and hypothermia. Try and explain that one to an ER doc who isn't from here. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of Lake Superior, you can't stand in more than a foot of water without your feet going numb in 15 minutes. And this is in late July. Couple years ago it froze over. Not exactly the 85 degree FP lagoons. Hysterical sign though, and yes I hate the damned things. They are responsible for more shore erosion in this state than anything else.

I didn't want to add the part that you die if you fall into the water. But most people wear wet suits when they go out on one in the "big pond" as we natives call Lake Superior. People even surf here, but then it is under deadly conditions. Minnesota is not for the weak.

Jet skis are kind of in the same boat as snow mobiles, and dirt bikes. While I'm quite sure they're are a heck of a lot of fun, they are noisy as hell! With all the noise and hustle and bustle of our every day lives in the big city, it seems like an escape to a quiet place filled with nothing more than the sounds of nature is what we would all strive for in a vacation in paradise. There are other relatively QUIET ways to tour the lagoon and island....sail boats, catamarans, row boats, kayaks, outriggers. I really do hope at sometime in the future they decide to outlaw jetskis there. They quite simply don't belong there. It just goes against what the whole place is about.

Oh, gosh, I remember trying to swim in Lake Superior (in Wawa) in the summer when I was a teenager. By the time I got in to my knees, my feet were completely numb (I was smart enough to get out at that point). I grew up swimming in Lake Huron. I even walked off ice and into the water there on a dare once, but it never felt as cold as Lake Superior!

Hey Holte I just read your post from June 16. 10,000 lakes come on. We got 11,000 in Michigan. (LOL) I got a question is it better to burn a few times a year to get a tan for the 3 month warm season or to keep a tan year around?

Reading this reminds me of another example of Americans imposing their views on another country. Jetskiing is actually huge in France and not seen as an annoyance at all. French racers and freestylers come over to the U.S. frequently to participate in such events as Smashing Pismo, Blowsion Beach Party, Quakysense Lake Havasu World Finals, and various regional events.
Jetskiing is highly regulated in French Polynesia and operators are required to have a boating license that is difficult obtain so you don't see reckless operation as you might in the U.S. That is why you can only go on guided tours in Bora Bora etc.
While I personally own 5 jetskis (down from 7), I also sail Hobie Cats. IMO the best way to see the water in Bora Bora is from the deck of a Hobie or a Jetski. The only place to sail a Hobie yourself is at Club Med which is worth the price to say all on it's own. I didn't think I would like a guided jetski tour seeing as I'm so used to piloting my own jetski, but I really enjoyed the Miki Miki tour and highly recommend it. Go down and negotiate your own cash price and you may save a few bucks.
All modern jetskis (and I haven't seen anything older than 1999 operated at the tour operations) are way below the 86db noise limit imposed upon them.

We did the jet ski tour 10 years ago--we had a guide--it was arrange thru Hotel Bora Bora--we did not go close to OWB at other resorts--we were taken to a private motu--had the coconut demonstration and we had a great time. The rest of the week we were there--we were never bothered by the noise--don't remember hearing it. Now, that could have changed in 10 years--I guess we will find out in Nov.
