I looked at Dr Poole's website, but was unable to find the information I am looking for. So hopefully you guys can help.

They don't seem to list the days, times, and prices anywhere on the website. Any info here would be helpful.

I believe I read somewhere that his tour leaves from the Pearl? Do they offer transportation from your hotel to the Pearl, or do you have to get there yourself? Same with the return???

The reservation link on his website does not seem to work. Is there some other way to make a reservation ahead of time, or do you just do it after you get to Moorea?

Thanks.

Yeah, the reservations link didn't work a year ago when we were trying to make reservations. And after trying several wrong email addresses for him that are floating around out there, we finally made contact via this address: dwwe@mail.pf

Whale/dolphin watching tours are on Mondays and Thursdays only. The boat does pick you up from the boat dock at the Pearl around 8:30 and returns you there around noon. The price is 6700cpf per person, payable on board in cash only.

There have been some negative comments about Dr. Poole and his tours on this board, but we enjoyed him--even though we had a disappointing trip. We finally saw two whales way off in the distance (specks, really), then an unlicensed boat zoomed right towards them and they disappeared. No dolphins that day at all. The weather was sunny, but extremely windy and the water was incredibly rough. Assume you will get wet from the spray, even if you don't ever get in the water (which we did not have the opportunity to do). However, two days before, someone we met at the Pearl said they had a fantastic trip, lots of dolphins, and the highlight of seeing a mother and calf near the mouth of Cook's Bay, and they got to go into the water to see better with masks. So you never really know what you will get...

We thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Poole's dolphin tour in 2004. They picked us up from the boat dock at Les Tipaniers, and other folks at the IC, and dropped us off when finished. I don't remember the cost, but it wasn't too expensive, and well worth it.

Its very hit and miss with these types of tours. I am not a big fan of his tour but its still a great experience. Worth the money since its not all that much and the possible pay off is worth the risk

Do you inadvertently get a tour of the lagoon with Dr. Poole's tour, or do you mainly hang out beyond the reef in open ocean? Also, does anybody have any idea what that dolphin/whale/lagoonarium operator is doing since the lagoonarium closed?

We have gone on Michael's tour many times. Once we circled Moorea outside the reef looking for whales, another time we swam with the whales, and the last time we spent most of the time outside the reef looking at the whales but he also included a tour of Opunohu Bay on the way to the different hotels to drop off his passengers.

Be forewarned that Dr. Poole's tour tends to be very academic, filled with scientific information. It's a little like sitting in on a graduate school class while in a rocking boat... The last two couples here who recently went on the tour said it was not their cup of tea.

Harold Wright's "Lagoonarium" boat is still in full swing, doing fish and ray feeding, finding dolphins and whales, and having a motu picnic on the OTHER motus. He has leased a part of the motu to create another "lagoonarium" site. His boats are packed every day! It's a wonderful tour too, and a little more casual than Dr. Poole's. The website is www.dolphinlagoonarium.com. (I'm not recommending one over the other, just pointing out the differences... different people are looking for different things!)

We did Dr. Poole's tour 2 weeks ago and was disappointed. The cost is 9000CFP now. Although the tour is educational, I felt I was treated more like a 6th grader than an adult. He kept saying to use our critical thinking skills...please...I'm on vacation!! It was raining that morning and I felt half the trip was picking up other passengers. He also was very "anal" about keeping his boat clean. We didn't see any whales and the dolphins we did see can be seen on one of the Motu Picnic excursions for a lot less plus you get a meal with it. I really didn't feel it was worth the money. By the way, it is now 7400 CFP not 6700 CFP.
