I just have to jump in here (a bit off-topic). We just got back from Quebec (the largest province in Canada) and went whale-watching on a Zodiac out of the town of Tadoussac. We saw soooo many whales that it was amazing! Belugas, minkes, and humpbacks. And the guides are bilingual so you don't have to worry about not speaking French. So if you miss seeing whales in FP, try Tadoussac! A 3-hour trip out on the St. Lawrence was $75 each.

Wow. We've done his tour twice, and at worst he was pretty preachy. He has strong feelings about the environment and the animals he studies. And doesn't suffer fools, for sure.
Too bad if he's let these tendencies get out of control. We've enjoyed these tours very much.
To contrast him, the fellow on Bora Bora, also a marine biologist, a Frenchman who does the coral preservation tour from the Pearl, is charming and we're doing that excursion again next month.

My two cents: Just heard a talk on the Paul Gauguin by Michael, and loved it so much went on his tour the next day. On both occasions he could not have been friendlier, more laid-back but educational, a gracious host. We went on a not-great weather day and we weren't having luck finding the dolphins in the first 2.5 hours, so he asked us if we wanted to go back or keep going, and stuck by our decision. And sure enough, we found them.

We have knowen Michael for over 20 years. First as a student at the Gump station, then as the young tour operator of his famous whale watching tour. He is a very serious marine researcher who has over the years added volumes to the world's knowledge of spinner dolphins. We have enjoyed many trips with him looking for dolphins and whales.
