Hi there,
Ok, I'm a little confused. Can someone please confirm for me:
1. Which pass in Fakarava is located near the airport (and which hotels are near that)
2. Which pass is the one by Raimti
3. Which pass is prettier to dive
I know that the passes are very far apart and often time, gas, or weather will keep divers at one end of the atoll from diving the pass at the other end. We're trying to figure out where we ought to stay.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Rotoava village has a small airport and is located 6 miles from the Garuae pass (one-kilometer wide). The only other - sort of - settlement (10 people ) is on Tetamanu motu (islet) located at the opposite end of the lagoon next to the smaller but prettier pass. Here is a link to a video of the Maitai Dream Fakarava. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UWlR51VnWs. I believe the Maitai is by the north pass.

Hi, We are also going to Fakarava in october 2007 and also want to dive the 2 passes. We contacted Te Ava Nui dive center to ask if they would take us for diving on the south pass. We really wanted to stay at Raimiti. They said they would not want to pick us up because Raimiti is to far away from the south pass. They suggested (wanted) us to stay at Motu Aito! We now decided to stay at Havaiki for 3 nights to dive the north pass and then go to Raimiti for 4 nights and just hope we can find a divecenter to pick us up there to dive the south pass. If not we can only snorkel the south pass.

It doesn't sound like it will apply for you this trip, but maybe for next time you can check out live-aboards. I have heard that one of the Agressor fleet visits the Tuamotus, including Fakarava. Definitely a way to dive where-ever you like as your hotel moves with you.

The Tahiti Aggressor ceased operations in FP in March. The Tahiti Aggressor is now the Fiji Aggressor.

Maitia Dream Fakarava is nearer the Garuae Pass, and has a dive shop onsite. One or twice a week they make an early morning run to the south pass. So I would say try them, I think they're called Fakarava Divers now.. Michel and his girlfriend. Very nice and very "mother hen" around you in the water until they're sure you're cool with the current. You're in for a fantastic experience.
