We're in the early planning stages of our next FP trip, and are thinking of timing it so we can see some of the big surf contest at Teahupoo next May. Have any of you ever done this? If so, how easy is it to hire a boat to be where the action is? How would I even go about doing this?

I've already checked out the Billabong website and it is pretty sketchy on the details, so I'm hoping some surfers (or surfing fans) here might be able to help.

Any and all advice is much appreciated!

Its not as easy as it use to be. Viewing from shore is not good at all. The good thing is most people will take you out for a few buck or beer. I would do a search of Pensions on Tahiti Iti and find one near Teahupoo. There is a few of them and ask them in advance if you can arrange for it.

Unless you have some binoculars, it will be pretty difficult to see much from shore. Also, the past couple of years, the tournament has been delayed because of lack of surf. So even if you try to plan your timing on Tahiti, you might still miss the event if surf conditions are not good.

Thanks guys for your quick responses. We were in Kauai getting married when the Billabong was happening this year and it was flat as can be. It was even too small to boogie board. We arrived in FP for our honeymoon right after the Billabong concluded, which I know was later than planned due to no waves, and we weren't surprised at all after what we had experienced in Kauai.

We're thinking that we would start our trip in Tahiti for a few days at the Intercon and then drive out to Teahupoo and try to hire a boat, or get on one, that is going to be out near the judging stand and the waves themselves. So, that's what I'm trying to figure out if anyone knows of places that routinely have boats for hire during the Billabong competition.

Also, we're considering ending our trip in Moorea, so that if the waves are small and the competition is delayed as it was this year, then we might have a shot at seeing it on the back end.

Thoughts?

Related to this post, there's a photo-journal book out on the mystical waves of Teahupoo. I saw it at Barnes and Noble the other day. The pictures are absolutely phenomenal and I'm not even a surfer, and there's some interesting story lines on some of the greatest surfers who have survived the incredible waves, which apparently break over a very shallow reef. If you're a Tahiti lover or a surfer lover, this is a nice book to have on your coffee table.

The photos are by Tim McKenna and he is the best in FP for photography of waves and other Tahitian images
Should be a good book

I saw that book when I was in LA a couple of weeks ago - it was brand new I believe and was on one of the main displays. Some real nice photos. There is also a decent video called "Solid" which was filmed during a year when they had tremendous waves at Teahupo'o. Excellent footage of top pro surfers riding some amazing waves with interviews with some of the surfers. I first saw it on an Air Tahiti Nui flight over and picked up a copy from the Australian e-bay site.

I just purchased the Teahupoo book and it is gorgeous. Indeed, as rodjune mentioned, it looks fab on our coffee table. Thanks for the recommendation!
