Hello! I am a 30 yr old single female traveling by myself in January 2008. I have a stopover in Tahiti that I decided to turn into a 3 days on my way back home. This will be my first time to Tahiti and am clueless about what to do and where to stay. Also, since I am alone and on a limited budget, so I was wondering if there was any place to stay that is nice, clean, and safe that isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg? Some of these family owned places I am finding online are scaring me a bit based on some reviews I am reading. Are the islands safe for a lone traveler?
Also, are these islands full of honeymooners? Am I going to stick out like a sore thumb traveling all by my lonesome? Are there any places that are more known for single travelers? Does anyone even think I would have fun on my own if this is more of a honeymoon destination? Are there any activities that anyone would recommend for a lone traveler only in town for 3 days?
Anything anyone could offer or suggest would be so greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Personally, I'd head over to Moorea on the ferry (take Le Truck--a local bus-like vehicle--to the docks to catch the ferry) for the entire 3 days and stay in a pension there (we're going to be staying at Pension Motu Iti since the snorkelling is so good there and it's quite reasonable for a beach bungalow--they also have a dormitory and that would really keep your costs down). I think staying in a pension would be your best bet since the honeymooners generally hit the big resorts. Pensions are known to draw people from all around the world who tend to be more likely to want to socialize with each other (at least, that's the attitude we're going with!). As a single woman, just avoid strolling on the beach in the dark. Other than that, you should be safe. Other pensions/smaller resorts to look into are Hibiscus, Les Tipaniers, Fare Miti, and many more.
The reason I suggest going to Moorea is that Tahiti is the most populated island and, while there are some nice sites to see there, Moorea is way less populated and the mountains and lagoon and just so beautiful. It's the only island we're going back to on this trip (we're going to other new-to-us islands, too, but Moorea is the only repeat island for us since we fell in love with it).

I second Old Wife's suggestion. I don't know what reviews you are reading, but you should have no issues in Moorea as long as you do things that you would do to be safe at home. Keep your money in a safe palce, don't go off at night alone on the beach, etc. I feel hitchhiking is safe in Moorea, but what about a single woman? Maybe hamara can answer that as he has a home on Moorea. Silvanocat travels single all over FP. I hope she answers also.

Well, I third OW and holte's suggestions. Les Tipanier and Hibiscus have that lovely beach and many food venues but I don't know what the costs are for a single. Motu Iti is very nice and safe and the dormitory might be just the ticket for you. There was a young woman about your age who did a solo trip last year or maybe a little longer ago....she was from Canada too like Old Wife...can't remember her name for the life of me right now. Anyway, if we could just think of her name, you could do a search here and read all that she encountered. She received some very good travel advice from the TE members and was kind enough to post a trip report......Does anyone remember who I mean?

That's it Tom!!!!....THANK YOU! How are you anyway? We certainly enjoyed our time with you are the Trader Vic's soiree. GeeD, anyway, now that Tom has given us Sammy's name, do a search with her name on this board and you will obtain some really good advice and gain some confidence for enjoying FP solo. Do check out the prices at Motu Iti and the other spots on Moorea.....It is indeed a lovely place and you will enjoy yourself.
