Dear FP-fans, I'm planning to make a dream come true experience next February, when my husband and I will be traveling to New Zealand and finalizing with 4 nights in FP in world trip.
I saw many discussions regarding island choices, but I really would appreciate your opinion in the matter Bora-Bora & Moorea.
We have only 4 nights to spend in FP and I have to decide between this 2 islands. My heart and mind say that we have to go to Bora-Bora as this might be our only chance in a lifetime… Said that, it seems [please, correct me if I’m wrong] that Bora-Bora is much better for snorkeling? But it seems that Bora-Bora is more expensive than Moorea and that both Island are very different. Is this true? So how can I decide?...
My husband and I want some place to rest and relax. Just to enjoy nature and the paradise on earth, as FP seems to be.
If we go to Bora-Bora – after reading such good comments on the Sofitel Motu – I decided that we should go to this resort in an over water bungalow with breakfast and dinner included. The meal package is quite expensive in my opinion, but I understood that it is even more expensive if you would pay separately at the resort? Has anyone used meal package? And can we diner in the Sofitel Beach based on the package?
Regarding Moorea – in case this should be better that Bora-Bora, we would also stay at the Sofitel with the meal package…
So please, if we have to choose based on our wishes, what would you recommend us?
Thanks in advance for your responses! Regards, Dutchgirl

BB is my recommendation over Mo'orea if you can only do one island. The Sofitel Motu is a great place to stay in BB. However, I would not necessarily recommend a meal package. We considered it but chose not to use it. If you are price sensitive, you can always eat meals at the Sofitel restaurant (also at the Sofitel BB Beach Resort) and just pay on your own. Better yet, there's a lot of lovely restaurants to choose along Matira Beach. It may take about 10 to 20 minutes to get there when you figure in the short boat ride and walk down the road but it's all part of the BB experience. There's a roulotte with delicious simple food just down the road near the Le Moana Intercontinental. Eating off site could possibly save you some money and at the same time broaden your dining pleasure and adventure. If you'd like pictures of the Sofitel Motu from our trip, email me at rodjune at yahoo dot com.

I second rodjune - We stayed on both BB and Moorea and, IMHO, Bora is stunningly beautiful. Moorea does have beautiful mountains, many prefer it to BBbut we have been to other mountains as pretty. To me and my wife, the colors of the Bora Bora lagoon are incrdeible. Ours jaws dropped. Of all the places we stayed in FP, Bora is the one island we will not miss when we return.
We stayed at the Sofitel Motu and loved it. Is was very secluded. One of the main attractions for snokeling, the coral gardens, in just off the end of the motu. We walked around the motu on our own and dove there. We stayed in the deluxe horizon overwater, and though expensive, it was worth it. they are on the end, without being blocked by the other owb's
I also agree you shouldn't do a meal plan on BB. We only took the breakfast plan. The shuttle boat was (in 2003) on demand and reponse was very good. some other resorts have a fixed schedule and it can be a long wait if your timing is off. There are several restaurants close by, as well as Bloody Mary's and Top dive. The Sofitel Marara (now beach resort) also had a restaurant and a good dance show. I also highly recommend the 30 min helicopter tour -- again amazing views from a different perspective of the gorgeous lagoon.
It's your decision on the cost. We spent a lot as well, but how much is a once in a lifetime experience worth? I guarantee you will never foget your first look at Bora Bora!

I would mostly likely choose Bora Bora and I think if you want to go with the Sofitel Motu you are getting one of the best values on the island!!
I agree with the others about the meals plans, but I wanted to add that if you are referring to February 2008 I do believe the Sofitel Motu is offering complimentary breafkast and dinner daily for a 4 night stay, so you will have the meals available to you, but if you eat elsewhere on the island, you won't be losing any money.
Good luck and it sounds like a fabulous trip!

Thank you for your replies! Wll, I guess I more than convinced to go to Bora-Bora and I was quite decided to take the meal plan, but after your replies I'm not so sure anymore!... Well, I hope Jellls is right and that the sofitel Motu offers the breakfast and dinner complimentary!...

I agree with the Sofitel Motu. Once in a lifetime must see. If your meals are not included I would not take meal plan. Rodjune mentioned taking the boat back across is a great idea. There is a store to get food or restaurants too.

Be sure to check with your travel agent that your package has the complimentary meals. Just because some guests get a special during a certain time period does not mean that it is automatically extended to everyone.
Otherwise, I would go with no meal plan. It's fun to visit different restaurants and if you compare a la carte prices at the hotel and the meal plan you may discover that there is no savings in getting the plan.

February is low low season with most hotels practically empty. I would suggest to "shop" around whichever island you may choose to find a good deal (like Intercontinental offers 4 nights for the price of 3, Sheraton has special deals etc. Indeed make sure you have at least your breakfast included (average price hotel breakfast buffets is 30 euro pp) so you can relax and enjoy before taking off for the day. No fun taking a boat shuttle with a rambling stomach in order to find a cheap place to have breakfast! Both Moorea and BB have plenty of restaurants, snacks and stores to offer an alternative for lunch or dinner with often free transfers to pick you and take you back to your hotel, taxi's are very expensive here and public transportation is virtually non-existant.

Sorry guys, but I think you SHOULD take the meal plan. "My husband and I want some place to rest and relax". If you had the choice of lining up the shuttle, the taxi, get ready on time (come on - the boat leaves in 3 minutes!"), or slowly walking to the restaurant for dinner, then it is a "No Brainer". Take the meal package unless you want to explor Bora Bora or "relax". For the time you are spending there, you need to relax, so just move in and chill out. Just my opinion, so please don't flame me.
