I have been to both but have not stayed there. BOth are run by locals and they are right next to each other. Very nice on the hill and a short 1 minute walk to the dock. All grass around it and a nice view of the bay. Its not located on the lagoon but in an inlet bay so its kind of like a lake. I think you get a free car with it and a boat so you can go all over the island. Its very nice, clean and very local. It would be fine with a small child.

We have been to the Villas Bougainville several times. Last February we stayed there for almost three weeks. Raphael the owner is an absolute prince of a person! We have only stayed in 2 of the bungalows, so I can't speak to all of them, but some of the windows have screens. There are fans as well as A/C if you want to pay extra for A/C. We have never used A/C, but I come from Minnesota in horrible winter, so I want to soak up every BTU. The bungalows are spotless. Raphael has someone grooming the grounds everyday so the yard is beautiful. There is breadfruit and pamplemousse available for you to pick right on the grounds. You would have to bring your own beach towels and personal soap and shampoo. There have been young children staying when we have been there. I believe the Vacances are owned by a brother or brother-in-law. I have never been in them, but they look very nice too. The kitchen has anything you might want in terms of cooking items, I think.(toaster, pans, coffee pot, etc.) I hate to cook so we end up eating sandwiches, although last year my husband fried fish. We really like having a car and a boat. There is a very nice, long dock with a little covered gazebo where you can sit. Raphael has a fish trap where he keeps interesting fish to look at at the dock. I bring a lawn chair from the bungalow to sit on. There is a barbecue pit and washing machine at the bungalow. He also has a coconut scraping bench, which we have never used, but it's there if you want to do that. The water is not suitable for swimming there, but with a car you can go where you want. And the boat expands your options tremendously. If you have any questions on where to go with the boat, ask away as we know lots of good spots and the directions of how to get there. We really love the Villas Bougainvillea. Raphael does not speak much English, however. He is an excellent host.

Thanks everyone, I also found a bungalow with kitchen and car ( no boat ) for similar price : 20 000 CPF : Fare Maeva near Fare. Wondering if that might be an option too ? Anyone been there ? CAn you walk to town ? Bougainville is a bit dearer actually, with one child I would need 2 bedrooms. It all comes to 27 000 then I think. So I am wondering if Fare Maeva might be an alternative ???
cheers, Amadeus

I have never even seen Fare Maeva, but if no one answers, we did meet a couple that was staying there last year. The woman had remarried and wanted her new husband to see Huahine and Fare Maeva where she had stayed in the past. So that's all I know about Fare Maeva. Every year I say that I am going to look at the other places, but I have looked at some, but not that one. I get too greedy with my time. They were from California or Hawai'i. I can't remember which. You could ask Raphael if it would be OK with him if your child slept in the same room with you. There is room. There is also a daybed in the living-kitchen area in the bungalow that we stayed at that could be used for sleeping as well.

PA-I knew Raphael was going to California. If you talk to him again, please say "hi" from the Holte's in Minnesota. I've been trying to convince him to come and visit in Minnesota. I think it would be an interesting experience. Raphael is so great! Amadeus-if being on the water is not an issue, Marty at the Chez Guynette has an entire house for rent and she can get a good rate on a car. But it is not on the water and you can't walk to town, but it's a very quick drive. It is decorated very lovely and is in a yard with all kinds of plants and fruit trees.

Hi Holte, thanks, I still like beeing on the water and its great entertainment for the little one. So I think chez Guynettes house isnt an option. I will ask Raphael about the daybed, having to pay for 1 extra room for a 4 year old seems a bit silly. He offered an extra bed but a cot only ( he is too big for that). cheers, Amadeus

If you want to stay somewhere where you can go into the water with your little one, we're staying at Rande's Shack (90000 CFP/night for a one-bedroom 'cottage' that has an extra single bed or, I think, about 10000 CFP for a 2-bedroom...it might be a little more). It's walking distance to Fare and you can swim right there. The 2-bedroom cottage is right on the water, I hear, while the 1-bedroom is just behind. Rande's a former American so his English is obviously good. Here's his email if you want to ask any questions randesshack@mail.pf
