I seem to recall seeing one last time. But I just can't remember how close it is. Is it walking distance? Which direction? Which side of the street?

I know we won't be able to pick up much of anything once we get to Fakarava, so I though we'd buy a few grocery type things when we overnight at the Intercontinental.

There are some small markets but depending on the time you arrive at the hotel I would suggest you take a taxi to the nearby
Carefour supermarket. You may want to take a fold-down cooler
to hold your grocery items in. The selection at Carefour is as good as any supermarket in the states.

per my folks, carrefour was about a 35-40 minute walk on sometimes rough terrain.

they rode 'letruck' back from carrefour...there's a 'letruck' stop across the street from carrefour...there's no crosswalk but reportedly traffic stops when pedestrians step into the street.

Is there a little market closer than the Carefour? I really don't need a big grocery store. Just a place where I can buy a few bottle of water and maybe some croissants and stuff. We'd be going the store first thing in the morning.

If you take a taxi from your hotel to the airportin the morning there are several stores you can stop at on the way. Just ask the taxi driver to stop at a store for a few minutes.

We are at the IC for one day but want someplace nearby to buy breakfast, possibly lunch items. Any little store within walking distance to buy a few items incl water.

And Hinano... don't forget the Hinano.... I posted a somewhat similar question maybe a month ago, about walking distance to the Carrefour. It sounded, per Pacific Andy, that for him it was closer than 35-40 minutes. Walking times vary, obviously, based on the walker tho.

Hamara: do you have any guess as to what it would cost to get a taxi to do this, to take you from the IC to the Carrefour, and wait? We're landing at 1:00 a.m. local time, so stopping at the store en route is not going to be an option for us.

The Carrefour would be a 15 min walk, hang a right when coming out of the IC, walk down the slope along the main road, past the Sofitel et voilą. Road is pretty clean now, however if you want to buy a lot of stuff (heavy stuff??) better take a taxi or even rent a car just for 4 hours (probably same amount as paying a cab as they do not have taxi meters), if you want to take le truck it is indeed right across the road from Carrefour and nowadays there is a pedestrian cross-over. Or you can go left coming out of IC walking down and you'll find a Champion about 10 min walk (direction airport) and some smaller stores + snack.
There is a snack on the old Bel Air grounds next to IC, don't know if it would be good idea to go there...

Fist time poster here. While our travel agent did a pretty good job. I wish I had found this site before we went on our honeymoon trip to Tahiti.

Anyways my story . . .

We were at the Intercontinental a year ago for a short over night stay before catching a morning flight out to Manihi. I wanted to pick-up some fruit for later and perhaps some more immediate eats before our airport shuttle arrived. We did not purchase any breakfast at the IC.

I did walk down the road, but only made it to the traffic circle in front of the Sofitel. Sort of scary being alone in a foreign country for the first time, , unable to speak the language, trying to not get lost and therefor miss our next flight. Due to the time constraints of my departing flight, I was unable to make it to the Carrefour in time. But I did find two roadside food stands located between the two hotels. From what I remembered, they carried the typical fair, snacks, fruit, and baggettes. After getting though the language barrier with the vendor, I had spent about 700xpf for some bananas, kiwi and mangos.

The fruit tasted great in Manihi. I didn't buy the baggette and unfortunately ended up spending extra for the same thing at the airport food court. My information is over a year old. So I'm not sure if this will be of any help to anyone.

On a side note: I'm not sure as to the "why". But someone posted a picture of the Faa'a Carrefour posted on Wikipedia under the section, "Criticism and Controversies". Go to the website, do a search for "Carrefour", and scroll down mid-way. For someone who's actually made it to this Carrefour, can you confirm the picture? For you first timers (and for my second trip), now we'll know what to look for.
