I dont think the problem is keeping the local out but the problem of how some of the locals act within the hotels.
I travel a lot to Tahiti and mostly stay in PPT for business. I always try and get out of town before the weekend. The reason being is the hotels turn into spring break Tahitian style. I know the hotels in PPT want the local weekend customers and its positive cash flow for them but as a person staying at the hotels it can be a real big problem. My last visit I was at the Sheraton PPT at 11:00 p.m on a Saturday night and guys where peeing in the fountain in the lobby. People where arriving and checking in from the late ATN flight with their jaws open.
A few months back I was staying at the InterConti and about 20 locals and families rented the room next to me. They partied until the sun came up. Do you know how much noise 20 drunken, smoking Tahitian can make?
I have a ton of Tahiatian friends but some destroy it for all. I wouldnt accept this type of behaviour at any hotel and not if your paying over $300 plus a night.
The issue at the Sofitel Moorea is more of a revenge issue. The management where really upset that they went on Strike right before they opened and they lost a lot of the Summer tourists because of it. It more of a pay back.

a revenge issue on management's part? i cant see that. management was like this when they came in from France. the last strike was over someone getting fired that the employees thought shouldnt have happened, plus over working conditions.
dont get me wrong, i'm just trying to see your point of view...

Don't know about getting in trouble with hotel managment for drinking with Tahitian guy's, I got in BIG trouble with my wife lol, warning never upset Polynesian woman OR any Woman for that matter ;-)

I am not sure, but I know the management where upset by the delay. You really never know why.
