This year we will be arriving too late to use the luggage check-in and we will be staying overnight at the Airport Motel (didn't know about the Suisse when I booked !) I have emailed them ,with no response ,as to how early taxis can come as we are taking the 6:40 AM flight to Huahine. We have some heavy luggage as I have a lot of heavy books to leave in Huahine. If we would have to walk to the airport with our luggage in the AM, are there sidewalks to the airport? ( I know about the stairs as we have taken Le Truck several times, but without luggage). How far is it from the motel ,in blocks ,to the top of the stairs to the airport? What does anyone know about how early taxis go in FP? We stayed in a motel in Minneapolis one time (huge internet booking mistake-miles and miles from the airport!) and could not get an early morning taxi to the airport. We ended up driving our car and parking in the airport lot, but that's another stupid travel story on my part. I appreciate any input, even some educated guesses!

From my experience (but not with the Airport Motel), you can get a taxi anytime of day or night in Papeete or Faaa. It will be more expensive before 6 a.m., and you would be wise to make the arrangements the night before, either through the hotel reception or by phone yourself.

We had a very reliable, English-speaking taxi driver this time whom we have used before, and he gave us his card and contact info. He does airport transfers regularly. He went out of his way to help us get a Vini recharge card on the way from the Tahiti IC to the airport, and he lugged all our heavy luggage from his van into the Air Moorea terminal right up to the check-in desk. (This is beyond the call of duty for Papeete taxi drivers!) He also charged us the day rate for a ride late at night. His name is Greg, local FP phone number is (689) 77-65-10, and you can email him ahead of time at catgregtours@mail.pf. I hope this helps!

I have not walked that hill to the motel myself, but my educated guess would be there that there are NOT sidewalks (because there are none by the Le truck stop directly across the street from the airport), and you would be walking on the shoulder of the road. Maybe someone who's done it more recently can give you a for-sure answer.

A huge thank you!! We will definitely email your driver. We have just walked up to wait for LeTruck at night, so I couldn't see anything about sidewalks. The traffic there just zooms by and wouldn't that be fun to walk with no sidewalks! Thank you again. You are the best, as usual!

We stayed at the Airport Motel on Nov 3rd, and were very pleased with it. There are 2 ways to walk to it. One - the easiest one, is a dirt path up between houses and the hotel. There is a sign, but we did not walk up it during the night, so I don't know how visible it would be - dragging luggage up there would not be fun, and could be very messy depending on the weather the day you arrive. The other way, would be to follow the streets, and there is no sidewalk on the motel street. You first have a long uphill walk on the main road, with a blind downhill, on the motel road. I would certainly stay at the motel again, but would want a taxi, if arriving at night. Be forewarned they are very serious about their non-smoking policy. My husband smokes and had a cigarette in the bathroom before I got up, they charged him a fee for smoking in the room. So they seriously mean NO smoking. There is a covered balcony seating area at the end of each floor of rooms, with an ashtray if you need it.

For the price, which was about $136 Cdn - it was well worth it. Clean, tiled floors, comfortable bed, air conditioning and a pretty decent shower. They also have a nice continental breakfast, 1500 cfp, 2 pastries and a small baguette, with unlimited juice and coffee. We went for a nice walk in the morning before our flight at 11:00 and were able to go to the ATM. If we go back to FP we would definitely stay here again.

How noisy are the rooms? The airport is 5 minutes away so do you hear airplanes taking off day and night?

Its funny, I didn't think of the airplanes once when we were there. When we had the window open in the morning, I remembering hearing planes but other than that no. The sound of the planes was not an issue at all.

We stayed overnight at the Tahiti Airport Motel, too, and dragged all of our luggage up (I should say my husband did a lot of the dragging at the end and I just wore my backpack up). I just turned 50 (in French Polynesia!) and my hubby's 48. We're in average condition (not buff, not unfit--we stopped going to the gym a few months ago so lost the conditioning we'd hoped to have). We arrived at the motel around 12:30 (after midnight) so it was very dark. The motel's directions were a bit "off", in my opinion, so here's how I would describe it. Exit the airport and walk across the parking lot to the stairs. Climb them (it's a bit tricky with heavy luggage), then find the other flight of stairs (to your right) up to the street (again tricky with heavy bags). There's a little 'hut' there to catch Le Truck. Directly across from it is the driveway up to the motel. It's a bumpy, pot-holey walk and can be a tad slippery if it's raining. Take the second gate on your left (it's marked Entrée and Entrance). Walk through the gate & keep going to the staircase & drag your luggage up the staircase & the lobby is on that floor. We had 2 suitcases with wheels that weighed just under 20 kg and backpacks that were probably 3-4 kg and we managed with a bit of sweating & huffing & puffing. I wouldn't say it's easy, but it's doable. Your other option is to pay to store your heavier bags at the airport.

As for noise, we were put on the driveway side of the motel and there were 3 dogs directly outside our window (in the house on the other side of the driveway) who barked through the night & we heard roosters, too. So if noise is a problem, ask for the other side of the motel. We didn't hear any planes at all or noise from anyone else.

Thanks for the info. So what you are saying is that you don't have to walk along the road at all. You just go up the stairs ( which we have done to catch Le Truck)and go directly across the street to get the driveway. We can't store our luggage because the luggage storage place will be closed when we arrive. I have seen the huge sign, but I didn't realize the driveway was right there because we have only caught Le Truck at night.
