Hi, I'm going to be starting a 4 month backpacking trip and Tahiti is our first stop! We will be there over the Christmas period and wondered if there were any special events? Also where would you recommend we had Christmas dinner? We are staying at the Maeva Beach Sofitel .
Thanks, Lucy

In Tahiti Christmas is a family day. Most everything is closed except the small grocery stores that open for several hours in the morning. Church on Christmas eve is attended by many of the locals. Dinner: The hotel will have it's restaurants open. A good close by restaurant is the La Casa Bianca at the Marina Taina casa-bianca@3basseurs.com email them to find out if they are open.

Here are some activities for Christmas posted today by Tahiti Presse:
Miscellaneous : 12/11/2007 at 5:22PM Annual Christmas celebration to begin in Faa'a
(Tahitipresse) - Christmastime is due to make its yearly appearance Tuesday night in Tahiti's most populated Commune of Faa'a with the lighting up of street decorations.
This is the fourth straight year that Faa'a (pop. 29 851), the neighbor of French Polynesia's capital City of Papeete, has held its Christmas celebration, which continues until Dec. 29 with a full program of planned events.
Nearly seven million French Pacific francs (US$88,608/€58,660) have been budgeted for this year's celebration by the municipal government. Pro-independence party leader Oscar Temaru, the French Polynesia government president, is mayor of Faa'a.
This year's novelty will be "Games without frontiers", a local version of a popular French summertime television program, "Jeux sans frontières". The teams for the Faa'a event will be made up of various neighborhoods competing in a variety of unusual, out-of-the-ordinary games.
There will be a Christmas concert on Dec. 23 from 6-9 pm at the Faa'a City Hall. A parade of some 30 decorated floats with a Christmas theme will be held on Dec. 27. And an ecumenical church service will be held from 6-8 pm on Dec. 29 at the city hall.
This year's start of the holiday celebration follows more than a week of rain, which is not at all unusual during this hot, humid time of year known as the "rainy season," running from November through April.
The Faa'a Christmas celebration goes under the Tahitian name of "Taurua i Faa'a", which is a festive period of traditional singing and dancing competition and outrigger canoe races in the lagoon.
Organizers are hoping for a turnout of more than 1,000 people each night. "Taurua i Faa'a respects the Christmas tradition because the spirit of the festival remains religious," said Hiro, one of the organizers of events.
