They do look nice, but I can get Crocs here for less than half the cost. In any case, I'm not sure when we'll get back to FP (unless hubby decides to go for his 50th!) and we wore reef shoes (cheap)last month and they were fine (though they take a long time to dry & tend to stink). I don't get enough wear out of sandals to buy them often (and I have plantar fasciitis so I usually wear Birkenstocks when I need sandals here). Our summer just isn't long enough to make owning many pairs of sandals a good value. I can sure see buying them in Las Vegas, though!

As much as they did work great for us. Honestly, the $5 pair of water shoes I bought at Rite Aid did fine too. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. My hubby is one who likes to have all the new toys, so he buys them. I think he's a founding member of that mens club..."He who dies with the most toys wins"! The Salomons weren't cheap, but they really are a great shoe. We also do a lot of camping and hiking and stuff, and they work great for that too.

I can't wait to try out my other new toy that hubby bought...although I don't officially know about it yet, cause it's a Christmas present. :-) He bought me a new Olympus camera. The digital one that can be used underwater. I'm curious to see how well it works. Raimiti will be a good test for it. It'll beat the heck out of packing 3-4 underwater Fuji disposables like I normally bring.

Oh, wow, on the digital camera. Does it go down to 3 metres? Maluha said she'd bought the one that goes deeper (10 m, I think) and it worked for a short while & then fogged up. She returned it to the company (Olympus) and they replaced it with the 3 m one (I guess they had a design flaw with the other one). Hers was beautiful! It had such a huge screen on the back.

I bought an underwater case for my Canon Powershot (A30, I think) and it worked fine, but it was a hassle compared to having a true underwater camera. I did get some good photos, though (speaking of which, I need to finish editting those photos & upload them somewhere!).

We have the underwater Olympus, not sure which one, that we will be using for the first time in FP in LESS than a couple of weeks. Will report on how it worked. Good to know if it doesn't work that we can send it back. I agree with the Crocs and swimming-not that good but good enough if you don't need any power.

Yes you do! I've been waiting very patiently for your photos. You need to get them up before I go on my trip! So you have 2 months...get moving!

I don't know the exact details on my new camera....obviously, I haven't seen it yet. :-) I think it's the Olympus 770 SW. But I'm not completely sure. That's the one he was asking me if I liked....so I am assuming that is the one he bought.

I am a big fan of Aqua Socks. I've found them at Walmart and Target -- you just have to be sure to get ones with sturdy enough soles (you can buy more expensive versions at dive shops). You can't wear them for all occasions, as with some other shoes like Keens, but they are super light and easy to pack so it's what we go with.

Keens are great but I don't like the way they fit (long story, I'm sure they're great for most folks).

Last year I took my Crocs, a pair of Merrell sandals and a nicer thong sandal..that was all I needed. I found the Crocs very difficult IN the water..much too floaty. It made it really hard to keep my feet down when I was treading water. I did wear the Crocs in Raimiti when we went to the Moon Beach..would have done better with better support as well as toe coverage-as in the Keen shoes, but I'm not ready to make that investment yet. We have found the Scuba booties, with a fairly firm sole, just aren't good for reef walking..tend to slip and slide.

Patti and others... Salomon no longer makes the shoes you love the you recommended here.Do you have a suggestion for protective and non-stinky water shoes?

Yes they do. Here's a link to them at Zappos. They are great. But....not without a cost! They REALLY stink when you've had them in sea water for a couple days. Honestly, the regular cheapie watershoes from your local drug store also work very well....and they don't smell!!!

Last year I had only had my solomans in the water once and they didn't smell at all. This year I had them in the water every day and trust me, by the 3rd day they were pretty rank! I tried to rinse them out every evening and it really didn't help at all. By the time we left Fakarava for Moorea, they were so rank I couldn't even pack them in my luggage for fear of stinking up everything in there. So I threw them in our small duffle bag with our fins and snorkel gear. But...once we got to Moorea and threw them in the washer, they smelled great again!

Hey Patti, Thank you for the info. I'll try my Target or Rite Aide here. By the way, where did you find a washing machine in Moorea? I don't know how we will do without one for 15 days in FP.
