I'm coming down in January. What's the best way to go as far as car or vespa rentals go? I know there's Avis, Hertz, Europecar as well as others like Albert, etc... Should I rent on Tahiti at Faaa and ship the car over on the Ferry or should I just rent when I get to Moorea? I'm flying from HNL so I arrive late on Saturday night and have to spend the night on Tahiti before I go over to Moorea.

I don't think most rental agencies allow their cars to be transported from Tahiti to Moorea (I seem to recall someone found one exception). So take the ferry over to Moorea and rent there. Someone else can tell you which is generally the least expensive (I never did write it down since we haven't rented cars there). Everyone will tell you to carefully check over the entire car and noting all previous damage on it before accepting it. Otherwise you might get dinged for damage you didn't cause. And pay for the insurance they offer instead of counting on your own policy. This is one of those places where it's worth it.

I agree about Albert's. Where are you staying on Moorea? There are at least 2 Albert's locations, maybe more.

We rented from Alberts and had a great experience with them. We decided on a whim to rent the car since it had started raining earlier in the day and thought it would be better to explore the road around the island than riding a bike in the rain. We were picked up at the Moorea Sheraton and taken to their rental spot across the street from Club Bali Hai.
They had various rates (don't remember what we paid) for full day and 1/2 day (4 hours) rentals. Since our 4 hours was going to be up after they had closed for the day, we were allowed to keep the car overnight with a return when they opened the next morning at no additional charge. This worked well, since the next morning were had signed up to do the motu picnic with Alberts which leaves from the docks at Club Bali Hai.

We have also went with Alberts. It cost us 9000 xpf. for 24 hrs. That was in 2006 for a Peugoet 106.

Purehua, I would advise to rent a bugster, or a small car iso a vespa, there have been quite a few accidents with tourists on vespa's and it would spoil your holiday! You can take a rental car from Tahiti over by ferry but it is very costly and you'll have to take additional insurance for the cross-over. If you take air moorea in the morning you can rent straight from the airport at Tema, there are several car rental representatives including Alberts.

My travel was Dec/Jan. On Moorea, we rented from Albert. They were the cheapest. We got a small 4 door (Hyundai Getz), manual with A/C. It was more than adequate. The benefit was leniancy regarding return time. (See our trip report) We rented for 8 hours, starting at 11:00. They guy said he closes at 5:00pm (has party to go to), so just return it the next morning by 9:00. Gave us wheels to drive to more remote restaurants and morning wheels to go somewhere other than the hotel for breakfast. And, they didn't check for nicks/dings (there wasn't any that I added), and as long the fuel was close, they were happy. We did rent from Avis on Tahiti. They were more strict about full tank of gas and accounting for all dings, including doing a walk around.
Bon Voyage.

Wondering how much airfare is from Hawaii and what airlines you're using. Trying to coordinate this for July.

Islandbreeze, The only airlines from Hawaii to Tahiti is Hawaiian Airlines, only one flight a week (leaves HNL on Saturday late afternoons, returns from Papeete early Sunday mornings). Check the Hawaiian Airlines webpage for schedules from your home city and prices. They fill up that once weekly flight fast, so book now for July!
Hawaiian is often cheaper from your home city than ATN is from LAX, and they often include a free layover in HNL if you want to spend a day or more in transit there either way. It's worth it avoid the zoo at LAX!
