We are planning an extended stay on Moorea (2-3 months). This would be our "base camp" and doing some travelling within the islands during that time. Looking for quiet spot on lagoon (not the bays) with beach and kitchen. Could anyone recommend a place? I've done some research but would like to have opinions and/or recommendations. We spent 2 weeks in 2006 (Moorea/BB/Taha'a) and got the bug for a longer stay...! Many thanks.

Andie

First you need to apply for a visa (Extended Stay) as Canadians
like US citzens can only stay 30 days without a visa. Barbi is the expert on applying for visas. I have a 10 year resident
permit so I have no knowledge of the process to obtain a visa.

Thanks Hamara, I'm aware of that already and looking into the requirements for Canadians.

There is a new or reopened place that Barbi has stayed at that I think would be just what you're looking for, If I recall her descriptions correctly.

Barbi, this ones for you . . .

I think it's now called Fare Miti if you want to do a search while you wait for Barbi to reply. It's the former Moorea Village and sounds like it would fit what you're looking for.

Andie,

It is indeed Moorea Fare Miti that I would recommend for an extended stay! You can email me at BarbiJKM@aol.com and I would be glad to send you photos of the bungalows and beach. You can get a nice airy kitchen bungalow on a sandy white beach, nice location within walking distance of stores and shops and restaurants, and they will negotiate a favorable monthly rate for you. Check their website at www.mooreafaremiti.com.

I am not sure if Canadians can visit for 3 months (90 days) without a visa, unlike us poor Americans who only get 30 days. Check with your nearest French Consulate to be sure! And if you do have to apply for the short-stay Schengen visa, I can help with the details -- I've got lots of experience with it! If you do have to apply for a 90-day visa, allow lots of time for the process, a minimum of one month, but two or three months if possible.

We are going next summer for two months, also using Moorea as a home base from which we can hop around to other islands. How nice for you to have up to 3 months! You will love it -- and wind up feeling like a local instead of a tourist!

Andie,

Check this website for Canadian Visa documents required:

http://www.consulfrance-toronto.org/article.php3?id_article=402&var_recherche=TOM

(French Polynesia falls under the "TOM" requirements.)

Andie,

I guess Hamama is correct, and you will need a visa for a 90-day stay in FP. I found this information the following link to the Canadian French Consulate in Vancouver: http://www.consulfrance-vancouver.org/visas/anglais/canadiens/court_sejour_canadiens.htm
............
"Short stay visa for Canadian citizen

Documents needed

A Canadian national may enter France with a Canadian passport as long as this passport remains valid, and may stay in France during the period of validity of the passport up to 90 days without a short stay visa.

The rule requiring the passport to be valid a minimum of 3 more months after the end of the trip applies only to nationalities that are not exempted from requesting a short stay visa before departure and therefore does not apply to Canadian citizens.
Canadian citizens can stay in France until the expiry date of their passports as long as they do not engage in any activity other than tourism or business and do not exceed the number of days allowed to stay in the country without visa.

If you hold a valid Canadian passport and your total stay does not exceed 90 DAYS, you do not need a visa to go to France, Monaco, or a French overseas department (Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guyana and the Reunion Island).

Also, if your total stay does not exceed 30 DAYS, you do not need a visa to go to a French overseas territory (French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna) or, in front of Canada, the Atlantic isles of Saint Pierre-et-Miquelon or, in the Indian Ocean, the isle of Mayotte.

Important :
Any foreigner going to France, whether they require a short stay visa or not, should be able to present to the immigration officer when entering the country and/or a police officer if requested, in addition to a valid passport, required documents."

You guys are terrific! Thank you so much. I knew I needed the Schengen visa for an extended up to 90 days. I will read all the fine prints (!) and will check the Fare Miti. We'd like to try a couple of months at first and see if we're ok with that, then maybe extend it in the future years. That's our "retirement" plan anyway for now, spend 8 months at home in Canada and 3-4 months in FP every couple of years (every year might be a bit much, although it maybe very well grow on us!)

Barbi - I'm the same Andie to whom you sent the music file a few days ago...! Any signs of the baby yet? Thanks for the info on the visa; I may pick your brain again...How many times have you been there...sounds like many...!

Hamara - how did you get a 10 resident permit? do you own a residence there?
