Indeed, they just had the Schengen one, poor things. guess it gets confusing for people as FP is French but FP is in fact not part of the Schengen agreement hence the difference in rules and regulations concerning residency, work etc. BTW interesting to know that that is not applicable vice versa, meaning Tahitians are French citizens and do have all the same rights as the residents of the Schengen country so they can move freely around the member states in Europe...

Barbi, in fact that is how they try and protect the territory, a new law is probably coming into force soon excluding the French (from France lol) to take jobs that locals can have, which has been the case until now. They will have to be resident in FP for 5 years minimum in order to be able to take waiter, barman etc jobs in the resorts (ie non-management positions). In a way a good thing as I can not imagine (perso opinion) people coming all this way for their holiday to see just -with all respet- "white faces" in a lot of the resorts. I hear comments about that quite frequently

Poehere,

Yes, it's sometimes confusing, in an "autonomous" territory, to figure out what's controlled by the local government and what's controlled by France. It's great that the local goverment can regulate employment to protect jobs for their local citizens. But, at least for now, it's pretty clear that the French Embassies and Consulates are the ones who issue the travel visas to French Polynesia, not the local authorities, so I continue to recommend following the procedures they have established on their webpages. It's sort of like it is here in the U.S. -- the individual States have regulatory authority over some things, but the Federal government controls immigration and visas.

Andie:
Listen to the advice that Barbi has given. She has applied many
times for a visa for an extended stay in French Polynesia.
I beleive the requirements for Canadians and US Citizens are the same.
I have a Carte de Sejour good until 2014. Yes, I do have a home on Moorea and am a US Citzen. I was very very lucky to have met the right people on my first trip to FP and with their help
I was showen the way to get permission to buy land in 1983.
I'm sure the rules and requirements have changed since then.

So what happens after 2014 Hamara? Can you apply for another 10 year pass or what?

Yes Patti we can apply for another 10 years. With a
Carte de Sejour the chances of getting a new one are very good.
I always think of myself as a guest in French Polynesia. Pay my bills and taxes on time. I also always have everything written
in French when dealing with the government. A letter in English may sit on someones desk for months before its acted upon. Both Mary and I are blessed to have a home on Moorea and for this reason we donate it several times a year to Charity Auctions
here in our home town. To date it has raised over $300.000.00
