What is the condition of the coral at Coral Gardens and in back of the Sofitel Motu? When last visited in September 2004, it was not in good condition.

When I was there in April, the coral seemed to be in decent condition. Probably among the better snorkeling in that vicinity on Bora Bora.

We were just there in May, and the gardens (particularly in the channel between motus) were in really good shape. The coral on the opposite end, however (just to the north (left) of the dock), was still a little rough. A lot of coral died there with the huge surge they had awhile back. But overall, it's still second-to-none.

Thanks for the feedback.

Chris, when you were there in May, were you able to snorkel at Coral Gardens (across the lagoon from the Sofitel Motu and next to the outer reef) and if you did was that coral in really good shape also?

Am I correct that when you referred to the channel between the Motus, you were talking about the Sofitel Motu and the Motu just to the East?

Lastly, if you snorkeled here, how was the coral on the other side(south side)of the Sofitel Motu?

We did not venture across the lagoon, but mainly stayed around the perimeter of the motu (I guess I should've been more specific). The coral starting at right around Room 111, through the channel (east/northeast between the motus), and behind the sofitel motu is amazing. It's when you get closer to the motu's west dock after snorkling the perimeter of the motu where it suffers (SW of the motu). But by that time you've just spent about 1 1/2 in the water. I could snorkle all day in the channel and just outside of it -- it really is that amazing (I'm a scuba diver and still would prefer to snorkle there than dive anywhere else in the world specifically for coral).

Thanks Chris, that was exactly what I was wanting to know.
