The main island is about 3 miles wide by about 5 miles long (not counting the wavy roads). My wife and I will be staying at the northern tip of the main island in June so we won't have the luxury of hotel transportation. Is it possible to walk the island? The island is small but I don't know if the curves of the main road double the distance from our place to the touristy spots. I know a car can be rented for 2 hours for around $100 but after that 2 hour period, we'd still need a way to get from the rental location to our home.

<p>Any chance there is a place to rent kayaks (especially 2 person kayak)? I've been kayaking for 10 years and could easily paddle around the island with a passenger. Any transportation advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Where are you staying at in Bora Bora? From my experience (Moorea Peral Resort and Manihi Pearl Resort) the kayaks are free to resort guest. The paddles are stored elsewhere. Usually with the snorkel gear and fins. They even have an outrigger canoe. Are you staying at a resort or a pension?

Tried my amateur skills on one of these kayaks and you people make it look easy. Also since you are an experienced kayaker, the equipment might not be up to your standards.

Not sure if this will help since my experience is not Bora Bora specific. Sorry about not being able to answer your question about the walking either. Also have you seen the Bora Bora maps using Google maps? A nice tool for getting your bearings and checking things out ahead of time.

I think I read somewhere that it is 17 miles to drive around the island. And...there are some not so friendly roaming dogs up near the north part of the island. I think walking, especially in the heat and humidity, would be a real chore for anyone. Not sure how difficult it would be to kayak around, with the currents and boat traffic and all. Although I don't know that I would recommend bikes either, from a safety standpoint, but that actually may be your best bet for transportation. Does the place you're staying have bicycles for use?

It is possible to walk entirely around the island of Bora Bora, I did it (I heard it was 18 miles). Yes, the dogs were kinda scary in the north end but they were clearly guarding their property and did not leave it. You will be an uncomfortable distance away from the touristy areas. Bikes would be your best transportation option on a daily basis.

We'll be staying in a home at the northern tip of the main island. Looking at maps, it appears that all the resorts are at the southern tip of the island.

Because we're so far from the major hotels, I'm not sure how easy it'd be to get a taxi up there (or how cost efficient it'd be). Too bad I can't just buy 2 bikes for the 7 days we'll be there. I take it there's no Tahitian Wal-Mart or Bora Bora classifieds webpage anywhere.

I'm sure we'll rent a car or buggy a few days but like I may have mentioned, we'd still need to get from the rental location back to our house when the rental is returned.

LOL....no, no Walmart for thousands of miles...thank God!

You should be able to rent bicycles from some of the places that rent cars. But beware, the bikes are often not in the best repair....and they, like car rentals are not cheap.

Looking at the Avis rates, 2 bikes would be $50 a day (4000 XPF for 2), a 2 seater buggy would be $120 a day (9500 XPF), and a 4 seat Picanto (with A/C) would be $183 a day (14700 XPF). Does anyone have information on boat rentals? I've heard there are 6HP boats available to rent without a license.

If you do go the bike route, be sure to really check out the bikes carefully. I've head some horror stories over the years in here about flat tires, chains falling off, chains breaking, etc.

Hey waverida, where's a good place to stay in Knoxville for a game? We will be headed that way next Sept for the Tennesee-UCLA game. Just curious about places to stay near the stadium. Preferably walking distance, and not super expensive. Clean and comfortable, near some places to eat and drink, and preferably under $150 a night. Have any suggestions? Thanks a lot.

Waverida1, you can rent boats from the Novotel resort next to the Sofitel Beach Resort. They had them lined up on the beach last time we were there.

I think a boat would be a good idea, especially for a weekly rental. I'd think they'd be less expensive to rent. I wonder if they make The Club for boats so the boat doesn't get stolen. Anyone have any idea what a 6HP boat rental would cost? This vacation is going to be expensive so I need to know if I need to start eating Ramen Noodles now to save up for all of this.

Patti. I have information for you but I wasn't able to send you a PM (said you were at your limit or something like that).
