I've read somewhere that candles are hard to come by in Tahiti. My wife and I will be there in June and I was thinking about bringing a few handmade taper candles. Is this still a good idea for gifts for locals? I've read conflicting postings here and there about tipping in Tahiti; some say it's offensive and some say it's acceptable. If candles are hard to come by, I figure handmade scented candles would be a treat.

I read in another forum that instead of giving money as a tip, locals appreciate packs of sigarettes (especially marlboro red), since in FP sigarettes are very expensive. This could be an idea for gifts also. You may buy the sigarettes during your flight. Ciao
