My fiancée and I are planning our first trip to FP. Can anyone recommend any good travel books with good descriptions and pictures? It seems like the books I've seen just have a lot of words. But as I'm sure most of you know, a picture is worth a thousand words. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Well, the all time best and most comprehensive book on traveling to French Polynesia is the one by Jan Prince. But...it is mostly words and not any pictures, just a few maps. But.....it is a GREAT source of information. I highly recommend it.
If you want pictures of the resorts and such, what I would suggest you do is order every brochure you can from various travel companies that offer trips to Tahiti. I won't name them here because this site is run by a travel agency and mentioning otehr agencies is a no no. But...if you search online you can find many travel sites that have a free brochure they can mail you. The otehr thing I suggest is to go to the Tahiti Tourism site and order their free travel brochure. You can also get some brochures from your local travel agency.
By reading all the various brochures, you get a good idea of what's availble and at what prices. And you get to see lots of pictures of the islands and the hotels. I keep a stack of travel brochures next to my tub and when I want to take a nice relaxing hot bath, I slide into the tub and read all the brochures...and sometimes Jan Prince's book too. I must admit the pages are now a bit watered in places. :-)

Prob is most writers do not actually stay in or visit all the places they write about, they visit the islands and call around to update their information. The books are ok for general info though. Good source although individual opinions -but so are writers" opinions- is the tripadvisor.com with recent photo contributions by travellers which may give you a good impression of a place

I have all of the major guide books for Tahiti/French Polynesia and I agree that Jan Prince's book is by far the best for all-around info but without photos. I don't think you will find any guide book that gives you enough photos of different locations/hotels to allow you to make any type of decision based on that info. I honestly believe that if you are looking for photos and reviews/planning info, this is the best place to find it. If you spend time searching other parts of this site and the forum - especially the trip report section - you will have more than enough photos and info to help you plan your trip. You Tube also has many good videos of French Polynesia - especially those broadcast by Tahiti Tourism, ICA and the hotel chains themselves.

Be careful going on the Tahiti Tourism site...I have tried to order the Tahiti Tourism guide book a dozen times but to NO avail...not sure why I can't get one mailed to me but it seems impossible! Good Luck!

I have seen Jan Prince physically at some of the resorts and pensions that she reviews. The problem with any book is that it takes a while to get to the publisher so information changes. But as for giving a good overview, her books are excellent and if one wishes more info, then this site has the best info of any travel site that I have looked at. I have preordered Jan Prince's latest book which is supposed to come out in a couple of months, I think.

The current edition would work in a pinch. It still has a wealth of good information in it. But there have been several new hotels built, some remodeled, amd some no longer in existance since her last book came out. And the prices she quotes in it are going to be way off because the exchange rate is not near what it was when the last edition was written.
If your trip isn't coming up in the next 4-5 months, I'd wait for the new edition.

I am looking forward to the 5th ed of Jan Prince's book. My local bookstores tell me that it will not be avaiable for purchase till late May. Will be available sooner? Does the publisher need to do more before going to print? I will be travelling in June to FP, but a current version would be great as a trip planner guide. Thanks.
