The local network SIM will allow to make calls home at lower rates compared to home network rates when in roaming in FP.

If you have AT&T or the old Cingular service it will work in
Tahiti. I would call them to set up the one world phone option.
This way it will not cost too much. It still will be about $2.50 per minute and if you call within Tahiti its still an International call. If you get a Vini chip you need an unlocked phone which most are not. The cheapest and easist is the phone cards like Hamara said

The fact, for me, is that my network provider is Vodafone, and it costs 3.00 euro per minute to call home from Tahiti.
With Takiphone a three minute call costs 7.90 euros, with Vodafone 9.00 euros.
Probably the best choice are the phone cards.
