The local network SIM will allow to make calls home at lower rates compared to home network rates when in roaming in FP.

Loc: Los Angeles, CA 		If you have AT&T or the old Cingular service it will work in
Tahiti. I would call them to set up the one world phone option.
This way it will not cost too much. It still will be about $2.50 per minute and if you call within Tahiti its still an International call. If you get a Vini chip you need an unlocked phone which most are not. The cheapest and easist is the phone cards like Hamara said

Loc: Italy 		The fact, for me, is that my network provider is Vodafone, and it costs 3.00 euro per minute to call home from Tahiti.
With Takiphone a three minute call costs 7.90 euros, with Vodafone 9.00 euros.
Probably the best choice are the phone cards.
