I just read in the Honolulu business trade journal that the Tahiti Pearl Mart, which I believe is the one with the multi-floored operation in Papeete with the slick ads in Reva Magazine, is opening a store in March '08 in downtown Honolulu across the street from where I work, and another branch in Waikiki later this fall. I'll post back once I get a peek inside the downtown store and see what kind of selection they have and prices.

Very cool! Rod, you'd better keep Pareskevi out of that store! How are you liking living in HNL?

Figures, first you get to move to Hawaii, then you get a pearl market right across the street. I wish some of that luck would rub off on me.

Life is good here Barbi. During heavy traffic at rish hour, I try to think that Honolulu is like Pape'ete at rush hour. The local people here are so darn friendly that it's akin to Tahiti is some small ways. The serene lagoons of FP are not to be found here and that's the difference as most of know. Still, there are beaches on O'ahu that have barrier reefs like Mo'orea and it brings me back to our memories of our FP travels.
I think it's me that needs to be kept away from the pearl shops. I've already visited a dozen or so here on the island. In fact, Paraskevi got a new Tahitian pearl/diamond ring for Valentines Day to replace her blue Tahitian pearl ring that lost its pearl at HNL (airport) in December and was nowhere to be found in the terminal or plane. It was very sad as she loved that pearl but so did I. Now, I can hardly wait to start shopping for pearls again here in Honolulu at the Pearl Mart.

Tahiti Pearl Mart had a full page color advertisement in the local Sunday paper here. Their grand opening is this Wednesday, March 26 in the American Saving Tower here in downtown. Since it is Prince Kuhio Day (love those extra island holidays), I have the day off, so my family and I will be heading over there to check out the pearls. They are supposed to have it set up like their shops in FP, with three different boutiques catering to various consumer tastes and prices. I'll report back later this week on their selection and prices.

Today was the grand opening of the Tahiti Pearl Market. What a beautiful day it was there with thousands of some of the best Tahitian cultured pearls I've ever seen anywhere of the highest quality. Several vahines modeled their extraordinary necklaces and pendants. The lustre was unreal and all the very rare colors were available. I've priced pearls from many different sources here in the U.S. and this place has extremely competitive prices for what you get. Most of the pearls appeared to have an "A" grade. Our salesperson, Henri, is from the Bora Bora boutique, and spent a good 30 minutes with us showing us some charming and eye-candy bracelets, pendants, and necklaces. We were introduced to the owners, who were so excited to open a boutique in Honolulu. Another boutique opens in Waikiki this fall. I'm already picking out pieces for future gifts, as some of their best and most unique jewelry pieces were brought here for the grand opening.

Rod- Did you see any blue? Like Paraskevi, mine are gone as well. Might make it to Hawaii sooner rather than later if they've got them.

TPM is finishing a new showroom in BB (2nd) in Vaitape as well which will house the "exeptional" pieces and pearls only, they seem to be expanding fast. Soon Vaitape will be one big pearl avenue...
JUSTINE what are you looking for?

12-14mm sky blue roundish baroque pearls. I had a matched set that was stolen in a burglary last year. It was not pretty. I lost all of my jewelery except my wedding ring.

Justine - they have blue plus all the colors. There are dozens of boxes of loose pearls sorted by size and quality. I'll be going back there often since it's across the street from my office. I'll see if they have 12-14mm blue off-round baroques and get the price for loose. What shade of blue were you looking for? They have quite a selection in all the shades, with the lightest blue (pastel to sky blue) being a little more rare I believe.
