Hi There!!
We're planning our honeymoon to visit the French polynesian islands and we're mainly diving in Moorea. I'm an experienced diver and my wife to be is not that much experienced.
My question is, "is shark diving safe?" in FP? I'm diving with TopDive.
Please let me know as im actually wondering whether i should do these dives or not.
Thanks
Matthew

We've been going to FP since 94'. Never dove with sharks, but snorkeled with plenty, some rather large. Never have had a problem. They are not interested in people, just fish.

Very safe. Just docile black tips for the most part. You sit on the bottom 3-4 meters away from where the food has been placed. You will get some sharks swimming close by you, but they are on their way to the feast.

Hi MSciberras and welcome to the forum. There has never been a recorded shark attack in French Polynesia. And to be totally honest - I got tired of photograghing the sharks after a couple of dives. They see the divers as a SOURCE of food - rather than the actual food - as they are regularly fed by the instructors. If you surf this forum, you will see that there are SHARK FEEDING tours that you can do - and that's without actually diving!
Rest assured, you are (and will be) completely safe - as will your "wife to be".
Have a great time and look forward to your return visit (you'll both get the FP flu and itch to get back).
And don't forget to post your trip report here on this forum. We are looking forward to it.

Knowing my luck our first dives on our honeymoon we'll be the statistic! LOL Sorry just kidding, in fact it is true and we plan on doing approximately 17 dives in 12 days! And we will be doing both a night dive, a shark dive and a drift dive! You'll be fine!

Hi Guys!
Many thanks for your replies. I have also emailed Nicolas of TopDive and he said and i quote "So it's 100% safe. Dogs are 1000 times more dangerous!"
I guess im pretty safe then! :-) We're planning to do a couple of dives with TopDives, certainly not 17 though! hehe
I will make sure i'll post all the details upon return.

Hey Rudy & Lisa. Don't list a "shark dive" as ONE of your dives, because it will be EVERY dive. The night dives in Moorea are awesome, especially if you go to the same destination on the same day - amazing how it changes! The water is warm, the people are warmer and the view topside is breathtaking. You'll have a ball!

We are so looking forward to this. We have been reading and reading...surfing and surfing and frankly I am not sure if I will be surprised at anything I have read so much. But to actually be in the water and enjoyed the beautiful reefs will be amazing. We are really looking forward to the drift dive as we have not experienced anything like this. So we are pretty psyched about this. We are going to start with a couple of easy dives in Tahiti on Tahiti Iti and then do an easy wreck and wall dive with Aquatica. Then its off to the Paul Gauguin for the amazing diving amonst all the islands! Should be fun! Oh an leave some of the good stuff behind as you are one week in front of us correct?

My husband and I just got back from Moorea. We are long time divers. The shark dive in Moorea was very good. Top Dive, puts a cage of tuna parts on the bottom laying on the coral so that lemon sharks are drawn into the area. There were atleast 3 large sharks right away. Near the end of the dive, the divemaster took the parts out and hid them in the coral for the sharks to hunt out. That was great - to see a 6' shark digging into coral for food.
I know I said big shark but lemon sharks are okay, don't worry. As for those small black tips, they stayed at the surface away from the other sharks. If you want to see a black tip feed, go to Tahiti, Top Dive in Papeete does a great shark feed as well. And many more sharks show up.!
